So can anyone confirm that if I update the app I will NOT get capped? (since I am an "existing user").

Otherwise, will I just have to live with the "1" badge on my App Store icon forever?

If you don't want to pay, or you don't want to potentially be limited, don't upgrade. I agree with the very few people here who have said that it's ridiculous for everyone to be whining about the developer wanting to make a little money off an extremely successful venture on their part.

Now if they forced users who previously downloaded it for free to pay, yes, that would be a problem. But nobody says you have to update/upgrade. You want the free unlimited version, then stay where you're at and don't update it. But all this whining because people don't want to give everything away free forever is just sad. Most trials or shareware programs don't last nearly as long as they allowed the free unlimited version of Shazam. They were more than generous and are still being so.

It is not that I don't want to support the developer, I just don't use it enough to justify the $5 for unlimited as I only use it about 5-10x a month. We will have to see how much I use it.

The good news, "Existing Shazam users, however, can keep using their free, unlimited versions."

This not gonna happen, even for future iPhone owner, unless Shazam can somehow record the whole song, save it to a playlist and bother you later to buy the song thru iTune. The option of saving it to a playlist so I can listen to it over and over would probably persuade me to buy the premium. :D

I just thought of something.......... people that want the full Shazam features w/o the fee will probably flock to Cydia. I know it'll be a sad story. :(

I call BS, I updated tonight thinking my limit wouldn't get capped and it did, so after a year of Shazam being one of my favorite apps I am deleting it and just using Midomi which does not limit you.

yeah, and the fact that it never correctly identifies songs is just a bonus....

I updated and just tagged 6 songs without any problem. It even says something on the start screen about it being a limitless version. I can't quote it exactly since that screen's now been replaced with the songs I tagged.

Personally had no problem paying for the new program.

I recall saying when Shazam first came out that I would have paid $5 for it.

when walking through stores I hear a song I like, tag it then download it when get home.

yup.your going to get a ton of users leaving 1 star ratings complaining, and then go get the app for free anyways.

Restore Shazam from 1.8 to 1.7 (or any other app too)

I normally read reviews before I do an update. I'm always concerned that a newer version will damage, delete or drastically change the app with the update. Unfortunately, I assumed this was simply an OS 3+ update and not a revamp of the whole app.

I wasn't exactly sure if there would be a 5 song limit imposed with the 1.8 update, so I found a way to restore the app to an older version I had backed up on iTunes. (do not delete new app/install, the restore will replace it for you)

Check your applications folder to make sure the app is there. If you don't, it's already too late. If you still do, right-click on app, select (get info) and ensure it's the older version. Then move on to next step.

First,(Windows inst.) select edit, preferences, click the devices tab, then select disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods.

Secondly, connect your iPhone, when iTune displays it, then select the applications tab. Make sure Shazam is selected (or just sync all) then select sync.

When the restore is complete you should have the older version reinstalled. Make sure to enable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods after you're done and create a new backup in case you have newer apps you'd like to keep.

good luck!

I say to anyone who has either downloaded Midomi when it was free or is thinking of purchasing either Shazam or Midomi, to get Midomi.

Unlike Shazam they are not making you pay along with displaying ads. They have just released an update tonight which improves the speed (already much faster than Shazam) and allows you to play your music through the Midomi while it gives you the lyrics. Midomi is now leagues ahead of Shazam and it doesn't have any ads.

i updated while ago and didn't even know they were gonna put a cap on it, but i definitely went over that 5 song limit and im still good, ill still pay for that $5 app though as a tip also.

Well now I know not to update, but I checked out the app after having not used it in awhile and now it seems to not identify any songs.
i feel that also, simple songs not even remixes or anything its unable to get it, i got to try a couple times.

I also didn't know they made this change until after I had already updated the file but it's working like it always had. Have tagged a bunch of songs over the weekend, well over 5 and no problems.

It still tags most songs quite easily though some obscure, super indy don't always.

If you do decide to pay for it, get the Red version.

Thanks for this tip! I have held off on updating this app and grew tired of seeing that "1" badge but came across your post and re-downloaded Midomi for FREE! Thanks!
