I actually just use the stock Reminders app. You can create a new Groceries or Shopping reminder, give a specific color and even hide the items as you mark them completed. You can add notes, URL, alarm, priority and even subtasks to each list item. Check out the options in the ellipsis menu icon at the top right of any reminder.

The thing I love most is that I can edit the list on my iPad or MacBook Air and the updated list will appear the next time I open that list on my iPhone. Continuity and Handoff are awesome!
My wife and I use OurGroceries. It also has an Apple Watch app.

Previously, using an app called Paperless. Lots of bells and whistles: big list of icons for lists, options to add at beginning or end of list, duplicate lists, cloud sync between iOS devices, check marks or not. Downside, no Mac support. Had a bug with iOS 13 and font colors, but looks like new version pushed out a week ago that might have fixed that (will test tomorrow). Developer has a new fork of this app with more features, Ikiru.
Grocery looks like a nice app, but they've added items as premium features to justify in-app purchases. I also fail to see how a complete recipe editor has any place in her grocery shopping list.. you can easily add items to a grocery list. And keeping track and replenishment of inventory in your pantry can be done with human eyes. The Grocery app keeps your lists in the Reminders app anyway - looks like the developer is using the Reminders app for the heavy work and uses the Grocery app for extra features.
Just my $0.02
Keeping track of what is in your pantry is listed as a premium feature; I would rather use my brain and eyes, no need to pay for something I can already do. Many of the Grocery app features promote laziness, in my opinion.. something I would rather avoid. The premium features are totally optional. You should give it a try first for a little bit and see what you think. Even though it is Reminders under the covers, it's really nice having a dedicated grocery app that remembers what you bought and such.

The app might be great for some folks.. but I like to avoid 3rd-party apps and purchases when I don't actually need them.
What about “Apple Notes”? My wife and I use this. Instantly syncs between devices. If one is out shopping and the other adds something to the list - it immediately updates.
You can make a checklist - where you can tick off each item.
Make a list on the Mac - it is picked up on the phone when out shopping.
That's what ShopShop does. Nice feature.yes, I’ve been using this and not bad. Just thought with a dedicated app I’d get some nice features. On the notes for instance, would be nice if once you checked an item and it dropped down, it would fall into place alphabetically.
As the co-founder of AnyList I am hopelessly biased, but I do hope that you'll check out our app. Just so I'm not tooting my own horn too much, here's a independent review of the app:
Our favorite grocery shopping app – The Sweet Setup
AnyList is our favorite app for shared grocery lists. It’s well-designed and easy to use, it makes shopping for groceries simpler, and it’s available as a universal iOS app as well as a web app. We spent several weeks trying out many well-known (and not so well-known) grocery apps to determine...thesweetsetup.com
If you use Alexa or Google Assistant, AnyList works with both of those, which can be really handy while cooking. For example, just yell, "Alexa, add olive oil to my shopping list," while your hands are covered in olive oil, and it'll show up in AnyList (after you link your account with Alexa).
Please email us at team@anylist.com if you have any questions.
Since you've jumped into the fray here , I wonder if I can ask you why more shopping apps don't have barcode scanners? Is that data not readily available or affordable to put into an app?
Databases of product information tend to be expensive, incomplete, or most often, both. Many of them do not include items from Trader Joe's and store brand items, for example. Of course, the more expensive databases tend to be more complete, but even then there are huge holes in them.
If you're willing to deal with numerous limitations, then you can use a Siri shortcut to scan barcodes and add items to AnyList. For example, here is a shortcut that scans barcodes and add items to Reminders:
https://shortcutsgallery.com/shortcuts/scan-upc-ean-to-list/
That shortcut could be adapted to add to AnyList instead, using our "Add to List" shortcut action. But you'll probably find that many of the items you scan aren't recognized, and that the data is messy and not very uniform.
AnyList remembers items that you've added previously and offers them as auto-complete suggestions. Since most people tend to shop for the same things on a regular basis (e.g., Milk, Bread, etc.) is it often quicker and easier to just start typing the item name than to scan a barcode. For example, to add Olive Oil, you could just type "ol" and pick the Olive Oil suggestion, compared to bringing up a camera and pointing it at a barcode.
Check out Grocery. The power of the native reminders with extra capabilities.
