The high-end Mac Mini.

You mean the quad core? If so I highly doubt that. Anyone who is willing to spend >$2000 on a new computer already knows the benefit of the quad core and either likes the technology or can really benefit from it. Anyone looking at a potential "budget iMac" would be the same customer base looking at the Mac Mini. No doubt.

I'd rather see

I'd rather see an iMac that could really use an SSD.

SSD's still are too small to be the only drive in a desktop machine. So, an SSD iMac would need room for two internal drives.

No it would I imagine leave some people buying the Mac Mini, but I have a feeling it would dissuade a lot of those that are buying the higher-end Mac Minis to sticking with the Mini. I have to imagine that the fabled budget iMac would be at $700ish, seems like that's Mac Mini territory to me.

i quiet like this idea of a basic iMac based below the base iMac 21.5 and for the prise of a base mini ,
because for example me , i want everything to Match somehow , so i could not use my dell screen for a mini as its a black screen the screen sfor a mini should be ideally a alloy stand , a white front bezel and a alloy and white back, so it would match the top of a mini from the back , but thats my understandig of aesthetics
for the ones who think that would be expensive for apple , it would not ,
make it 20" ,because they already produce the casing the screen , they only would have to use the innards of the old 20 inch iMac , from which they must have some spares left , and bring production back running would be not much expensive either , as in china all the parts to make it are lying around , so its only open a production line with a couple small chinese people and get the thing build
but i quite like the design of this 18.5 iMac above , and i think it would be easy to get it build , use a bit cheaper processor, for most users it would not need to de a core 2 duo , for most people who just need a computer for websurfing and watching the odd youtube and dvd , even a celeron would do , a bit cheaper graphics card and ,but
this thing in a bit different design exists already from dell , the " dell one 19 " which has Intel Celeron 450 (2.2GHz, 800MHz, 512K cache) and intel GMA x4500 graphics ,3072MB Dual Channel DDR2 800MHz Memory 320gb harddrive ,and a touchscreen and all for just £479 compared to the mac mini base for £499 and thats without a keyboard or mouse or screen as you know
, not a power house but useable for every day computing ,
i would even consider buying it ,, but sadly no osx and osx is a must for me i hate windows
so i cant buy it ,
unless dell give really driver support for all intel machines to run snow leopard which is a rumor for 2010

the demand is there , i know lots of people who would love to buy a mac as they like osx , but they say mac`s are just to expensive ,
dont argue , you lot from across the pond in the usa ,
as you get the macs quiet a bit cheaper then we do in the uk and europe
just examples
you get the mini base model for £373 we pay £499 ,
you get the base iMac for £748 we pay £ 949 for it
and the 27" i7 you get for £1372 we pay £1758 for it and that is base with only processor i7 otherwise base
and £100 are $160

so if apple would lower the price for a mini here to the price in the us and offer a low end iMac for £499 it would sell , but maybe it should not be marketed as iMac instead fit a tv card apple and sell this buget iMac as Macintosh tv so people can still buy their iMac to show of their house, their car , their boat and their iMac ,
most people do not need a top screen ,most do not need a top processor or top graphic card , they just need a basic computer and less fortunate people could buy a mac tv for basic computing needs , but still able to enjoy osx
