Unfortunately that's one of the problems with Android and it also produces massive phantom battery drain. I found a workaround by force stopping many of the non essential apps that maybe causing it. When my Kindle Fire HD does that and I shut off apps that are non essential, I can go from 2-3 days standby to 10-11 days on standby.

CCleaner could help as it shuts down non essential apps that are running in the background.

Another option is to set wifi to turn off when the device is asleep. Then things like gmail etc. won't sync until you wake the device. Obviously not suitable for phones but I found for a tablet like the Nexus 7 which you might not use all the time this really helps improve standby time.

To the OP. I've had a nexus 7 2013 for almost a year now. It is a great tablet (but not as good as the iPad Air). If you want/need a small tablet though it is the way to go. Better than the non-retina iPad mini which is the other small tablet I have experience with. The screen is probably the best on any mobile device I've owned (including the iPad Air...). Performance is pretty good for a budget android tablet. On a small android tablet, phone apps will work just as well as tablet optimized apps so the app disparity between iOS and Android is much less severe. Unlike my 2012 nexus 7 which by the 1 year mark was unbearable the 2013 version is holding up very well. Feels basically as fast as it did when I bought it (only issue is I've bought faster devices since: aka Nexus 5 and iPad Air).

I like the N7 and never had a problem with my 2012 model, but I much prefer the LG G Pad. Cheaper, nicer build quality, lovely screen, better size/screen ratio. Can't fault it!

I own both generations of the Nexus 7 and can tell you unequivocally, 'Avoid anything built by Asus'. Their tablet hardware is utter junk. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to smash my N7 against the floor because the touch interface is garbage. Ghost taps, screen will go wild with hundreds of simultaneous taps or just register the tap in the wrong place.

Sending the tablet in for warranty replacement from Google just gets you another tablet with the same issue. You can actually separate the back cover very easily with just your fingernail and disconnect/reconnect the display connector which helps for a few days.

Point is avoid Asus like the plague. Get an iPad Mini or wait for the HTC Nexus 8.

Yeah I sold a first gen N7 to a mate, worked fine when I owned it, worked fine for a few months when my mate owned it. Suddenly the casing came apart. He clipped it back on then suddenly half the screen broke.

I've heard many bad things about Asus hardware in other areas too and equally bad customer service to match. I'd wait for the next once since current rumours say the next Nexuses will be made by different manufacturers.

I'm not a big fan of ASUS tablets either. I bought a 1st gen N7 and the tablet creaked and clicked when using it. The upper left side had the infamous glass lift. I was fortunate on my 2nd try because I had no issues with it but it did not instill confidence that it would hold up.

Well, I am finally extremely thrilled to say that I have bought a Nexus 7!!! It's been 2 days and this device is just perfect. So good looking, thin and elegant machine.

And on the software side: very fast, responsive. Stock Android is just great. So many well thought, little perks. The only problem I had was with pdf's. Somewhat choppy scrolling. I'm sure my tablet will be a whole new device when Android L is released.

I had been an iOS user for a long time. But all my life was on my Google account. Chrome on all my computers, Gmail as main address, Google Drive, Calendar, Contacts, Google Keep. Managing Google stuff on iOS was a hassle. Now I'm much much much happier. And I can't wait to get rid of my iPhone as well. (when the new Nexus phone comes)

I cannot recommend Nexus line of devices enough. I'm going all in Google! :apple::cool:

Yep, the Nexus 7 is probably my favorite device.

Very comfortable to use and hold, perfect size for watching movies, playing games and surfing the web.

Plus you get good performance, updates, Nexus factory images for an easy way to go back to completely stock, amazing price, etc.

Yesterday I played with the new Samsung S tablets and didn't like them at all. Screen was awful (I just dislike AMOLED panels more and more every day), it wasn't as fast and fluid as my Nexus 7, built quality was worse also (although they were extremely thin and I liked that).
