wouldnt buy a 2011 mini yet, wait and see if the next update has significantly better graphics/processor speeds then make the descision. And anyway, if the new update is just ivy bridge and intel 4000 graphics, then you could buy a 2011 mini for alot cheaper off some shmo who sold his for the new one ;)

I like to rip my Blu-Ray discs and play over Apple TV 3.

What are the advantages of this? I'm asking this out of ignorance. I just purchased my first standalone BR player a few months ago,if that tells you anything. :D

It's cool to have your whole movie library in one spot. No looking for discs or anything like that. It's convenience mostly. It's addictive too. I'm thinking about getting a Mini solely for a Handbrake and iTunes media server machine. If you have the Mini set up as an always on iTunes source then you can play any of your media at any time on your TV or stereo. Pretty cool idea I think.

I rip so I don't have to get up to put a disc in nor do I have to sit through previews. Plus it gives me something to do :)

...and it gives me something to do as well. Haha

Operative part of paragraph I think.

Honestly, I can't see why on earth it's worth it. Takes hours to do and takes up zettabytes of disk space and all for what? To save 30 seconds putting the disk in the blu player? If you played the movie 50 times, it would still be more time-efficient to not bother ripping it.

Don't get me wrong, I can see the attraction of an online library, but for the effort involved? No thanks.

It's nice to have an entire library of all your movies with something like Plex or XBMC running. Rather then going through a physical DVD collection, you have all the movies, all details, plot, characters, and so on, right there in with a nice looking interface.
I would much rather have everything right there, instead of going through DVD cases etc. Storage is getting cheaper and cheaper and having everything digital is the future.

The computer does most of the work. I don't put much effort into it. Couple mouse presses and that's about it. :D

What did you buy for your external BluRay player? What software?

I use MakeMKV. It's free for 30 days for Blu-ray rips and then you have to buy a registration code if you want to continue to rip blu-rays. DVDs are free to rip as long as you have it.
