Someone very clever invented the CD, with pristine quality sound and rainbow colors: they wanted to put something good in the world. And then an evil man came along and wrapped it in *beep*.

He couldn't stand the good, he had to destroy it. He had to wrap it in the cheapest, easily breakable junky thing he could find. Just to remind us all that the world is actually *beep*.

And now it is psychologically devistating buying CDs. Because when you buy something you say *I* want this. And he forces you to buy the case too, which is forcing you to say *I* want junk, I deserve junk, I am not good enough for anything else. And so the CD destroys the soul.
:D :D

Back on topic--I'd buy the CD because as others have said, you get more quality. I have most of my CDs ripped in Apple Lossless. I've only purchased 2 songs from ITMS, downloaded a bunch from emusic (at 320kbps for most), but most of my library is made up of my own cds.

I've never heard the artist, so I'm not sure if it would be worth it to buy the CD or download select tracks. I always buy my CDs from amazon/borders because I always have a few gift cards :) .

Just my couple dollars of gibberish...

Amazon is my choice for music, I just wait till I have more than $25 worth of CDs to buy then order so I can get free shipping.

You're only saving .16 at Wal-Mart, you'll spend more than that on sales tax and gas.

By shopping at Wal*Mart I am supporting a company that considers 32 hrs/week full-time, sells only a handfull of artists, edits those CDs, and makes people think they're getting a good deal because they're saving money.

The truth is anything but. Small distributors have to sell to WM to make ends meet, and barely do so at that. Even worse, big distrubutors have the choice for prime shelf space, both situations are harmful to the consumer because it gives us fewer choices.

Price isn't everything.

Also by shopping at Wal-Mart/Target/Best Buy I am supporting the Republican Party.

Call being politically correct picky, I call it doing the right thing and being selfless.

Definitely get the CD. You get the album covers, and a lossless copy. From that you can rip to any of the formats and bitrates that you so desire. I think iTMS is great if you want to save some money and just buy one or two songs from the same album.

www.play.com in the UK have free p+p on everything with no minimum order.
Fast turnaround as weel.

Sorry to sound like the PR man but i've used them for years and there very good.

NOTE TO THREAD SUNSCRIBERS.

Could you please state your age when yea/nah to CD/iTunes.

Makes things more intresting.

28, Male and not one iTunes track.

CD's all the way.

I think the way to get the most money to the artist is to go to a show and buy the cd from the merch table there. That won't count in the billboard charts, though.

Get the CD unless you hate CD cases.

Man, CD cases are awful. Cheap, plasticy, break easily. It's horrible to buy such a thing. CD cases are a soul crushing device, in the following sense:

The only way to get around this is to refuse to take the case at the store, or else use iTMS.

I too find cd cases the most horrible things in the entire world. That is why I have this philosophy when it comes to music:

1. Buy album on itms*.
2. Buy the album on vinyl if it's good.

That way you get giant, beautiful cover art, plus this big black pretty thing. Plus digital music. Death to the compact disc!

*ok so given that itms isn't in australia, this somewhat vital step is replaced, just for the moment (ie: the last 10 years), with buying a cd/borrowing it, and ripping it at 192kps (the world's most perfect compression).

uh oh - why?

Each track can only be associated to 4 (or 5???) computers. So if you dont desauthorise the comptuer before doing your backup, you will 'lose' one computer. But if you install Tiger with 'upgrade' there is no problem, there is just a problem if you did a backup and do a clean install.

I thought authorization was based on the S/N of the computer, not on the OS. Is this not the case?

yeah i have done wipes of my drive without de-authorizing without any problems at all, i think its related to the MAC-address of the compter or something

It is.

"While you may need to enter your account information again after initializing the hard disk, initializing the hard disk itself does not remove the computer from the list of authorized computers. If you plan to initialize the hard disk prior to selling or donating your computer, deauthorize the computer first, then initialize the hard disk."

get the cd, cause then its like an ultimate backup... you can re rip it whenever and a better quality as well if you decide to later.

Normaly I would say buy the CD. I like to have the physical CD, even if its more expensive then the download. But in this case, I would say downlaod it so Wal-Mart doesn't get your money. I'm not familure with the artist, but if it conatins profanity, the Wal-Mart version amy be edited.

I will never again buy a CD or download track that has been produced by one of the 5 major record labels because I don't want my cash to support weapons manufacturers and the military industrial complex.

IS WALMART THE ONLY PLACE IN AMERICA THAT SELL'S CD'S???!!!???

If their anything like ADSA (who Walmart now own) you get an ok price on chart and popular cd's and thats it.

Not exactly a HMV beating range.

Now if only some company released CD's in gatefold record sleeves......

I have tons of CDs in gatefold sleeves - all lemonjelly albums are packaged like that - it is a nice touch.
At least CD cases are better than cassette boxes.

The best CD case I've got is probably the Special Edition Amorphous Androgenous 'The Isness/The Otherness' Double album. You pull one end and the CDs come out of either ends of the box. It's the sort of packaging Apple would use!

btw most my music is CD format - I spent more on my hifi than I did on my powerbook, so it kinda makes sense

Oh and one of the best places I know to buy CDs is a little independent record shop in Cardiff called Spillers - very good range of more interesting music and very very reasonable too - almost always cheaper than iTMS and loads of stuff that iTMS doesn't have.

Can you even buy a drink in the US?

hehe...I love how this has turned into a Wal-mart bashing thread :) I try not to shop there either; only out of desparation. I will NOT buy music there.

Anyway, I buy music both electronically and in CD format. Usually when I buy CDs, it's from Amazon's marketplace (used...you can find some great deals there) or Circuit City (good selection and usually good prices for a retail store). I like having liner notes and sure, the recording quality is somewhat better, but instant gratification is nice and the sound quality is good enough. I have pretty good equipment in both my home and my car, and it sounds good to me.
