Apple will do most likely a silent update for iGPU models to Skylake era including Iris Pro 580 before WWDC. Could be also that 27" 5k m380 model becomes iGPU only, because they're pretty equal, at least on paper.

What happens to dGPU models, let's see. Maybe Apple will reinvent iMac when macOS comes out next fall... who knows.
I've been wrong before, I wouldn't say most likely. Its possible, but most likely is being overly optimistic imo

Nevertheless, I would say that the M395X is generally better than the M295X in terms of thermal.

*nods*

Doing the same things in the same environment with my R295X and R395X machines (both with SSDs and the top-end i7), the new (R395X) model works the fans noticeably less aggressively.

I would suggest waiting until the fall of 2016. Here is why. Besides all the obvious littles things, Apple removed "Target Display Mode" with the current iMac.
So if Apple adds Thunderbolt 3, There is a good chance that Target display mode will come back. You can use the iMac as a monitor for either an external laptop or custom built PC. Either way there's lots of extra flexibility in having that feature.

Yes, and Apple's' tendency towards Pro labeled products could lead to re-designed iMac Pro with HDR displays, new stand, dGPU's and who knows... Apple Pencil support?

Another 'could' post. They 'could' scrap OS X and launch an iMac with Windows - who knows? There again they 'could' simply scrap the iMac and simply concentrate on iOS. The point I make is no one on this or any other forum as any knowledge of what Apple 'could do', therefore such posts and threads are a total waste of time.

What we 'can be certain of' is we will all know when it happens.

True. That's life with Apple. But when someone asks, I give my opinion. I knew that Apple was unloading the masses of iGPU iMac's and the 5k 27" M380 model to a few bigger reseller. They are having the offer from April to 10th of May. Which is Tuesday. That could be a coincidence so I don't claim anything, but you know what Apple usually does on selected Tuesdays?

I'm in the same place you are (2010 system now) and I use it for photo editing. I'm upgrading now and not waiting. Apple appears to have slowed down on updating computers, MBPr has a normal cycle of 258 days, we're at 354 days now, MBA has not been updated in 425 days, normal update cycle for it is 350 days. Clearly, watch bands and different colored phones have taken the top spots in Apple's product line. When I combine this with not knowing what they're going to put in the new IMacs, I have no reason to wait.

Referring to a question about potential iMac updates
what does Apple have to update?
Well, on my wish list there is:
  • Higher capacity SSDs/HDDs as at least BTO options
  • USB-C connectors with Thunderbolt 3
  • Less emphasis on thinness and more on heat dissipation which should increase life
  • User-accessible SSD/Hard drive
Admittedly the last three require some engineering but Apple has the resources. IMO Mike's right, the 27 in retina iMac has received recent improvements, so, unlike the Mac Pro and Mac Mini where update options are numerous, iMac's status is relatively good.

When you say unloading, so it's a fire sale then, lots of old tech at knock down prices? Oh silly me! I thought for a minute I was buying in the the real world, I forgot this is Apple we're talking about.

Until we get a proper road map from Apple regarding their intentions for the desktop market my cheque book is staying firmly in my pocket. As things stand Intel and their NUC Skull Canyon is more likely to be getting my hard earned cash next time around. :)

WWDC is around the corner so you might as well wait. Though I doubt there will be an iMac update . Though the current iMac is very good at photography duties

The refresh is going to have a massively improved video card if you need that. If you don't, you can wait until the previous gen comes down a little more in price.

Or, you know, just buy it if you want/need it now.

My thought is Apple won't be ready to deliver major iMac updates until Fall 2016 because it probably includes USB-C T3, faster flash storage and AMD's newest offering ( Polaris?). Bringing this together in a WWDC-timed update seems less likely just because of the work involved to make it work. Of course, my weak anecdotal evidence is extrapolated from my own engineering experience and isn't necessarily predicative of Apple's efforts.

I decided to list my MacBook Pro on eBay and get an iMac 5k for the time being until the new MacBook Pro is unveiled.

I don't travel much and use the laptop at home and the screen is so nice on the late 2015 iMacs. My desk space is limited and the MacBook connected to a 4K display just takes up too much desk room if I'm writing or drawing on the surface.

The iMac arrives this week, and then I'm going to rip it open and add a SSD drive.

I chickened out on the DIY SSD upgrade, since I didn't want to tear open a brand new iMac, and went with the Fusion drive instead.

The new iMacs are sealed, and I'd in no way recommend opening one up, not when you can void your warranty.

I've watched several videos online, the process doesn't seem to tricky. If your good with building and taking things apart it should be easy, just time consuming being very very careful. I'll post pics, and maybe GoPro the process.

It's not so much that they are sealed, because it is relatively easy to break the seal just to open it, but the SSD is on the logic board and virtually everything has to be removed to access it. See iFixit teardown to make your own difficulty assessment.

I've seen the tear down, and for intents and purposes the iMac is a sealed computer.

I'm in the same boat as the OP with a mid 2010 iMac that still going strong..but using Logic and Studio One is taking its toll on it....what I'm really hoping for is for an iMac refresh that involves a bigger display..like to 30 inches..then I would automatically upgrade to it for sure.....for now other than the hard drive going KAput!!! I'll keep my reliable mid 2010 iMac with me without upgrading...... : )

Man, what I've been told and learn, Logic and real time daw performance will benefit more from a cpu with higher clock speeds than anything else :) FYI
