Should I jailbreak my phone? (8gig 3g)

I want to Jailbreak it, and I already have winpwn downloaded, I'm just not sure if I should take the plunge. I've heard of it bricking people's phones beyond repair, and I've heard of people having to completely restore them.

I just want to know, is it worth taking the risk? I really like the idea of custom springboards, and I've seen some cool mods around here that I'd probably like to check out.


And since Cydia's our only option for easy 3rd party app installation, (that I've seen anyway) is it still worth it? I've heard great things about Installer, but that's not out yet.

What do you guys think? Is it too risky?
 
Is there really any point to jailbreaking the 3G iPhone yet? The App Store has a ton of good apps. If you were going to use it on another network I could understand, but to each his own.
 
The apps are ok from the app store, but i'm also interested in the mods that apple won't let you do through them.

and I thought there was no way to unlock it for different providers yet?
 
Yeah there's now way to unlock it for different providers yet, that's why I said I don't see much point to it yet.
 
I Just jailbreaked my iphone 3G today because I wanted to connect the iphone to my macbook to browse the internet.
I read alot of threads about iphones being bricked before I took the plunge but there was always a solution offered to fix it, and it seemed to work.

It was actually a breeze to do!

I would wait a couple of weeks, until developers come up with a better installer and then will certainly hack (jailbrake) it because there are tons of GREAT application that apple won't allow developers to distribute!

At first i thought this was the best course of action as well, but after a few minutes of browsing over at modmyifone.com i found that theres still plenty of tweaks and things you can still do currently with cydia/ssh/cyberduck.
I will say that while there are ways to do things right now as far as tweaks and customization, its gonna take a lot more time doing it manually than if you were doing it using a certain application...Long story short...yes its simple to do, but be careful! :)

Actually... There was an article on Digg.com where a columbian man jailbroke the phone to use different providers.

So your statement is incorrect. The way to jailbreak for different providers just hasn't been publicly stated.
 
Although I would advise waiting, I jailbroke mine. If I had to do it all over again I would have NOT chosen to put the pineapple on it as the boot up logo. Dead giveaway to Apple service techs, besides the Cydia and other icons that I jailbroke it. Weirdly though I heard of one guy who jailbroke his and they gave him a new one with the jailbrake, even after some confusion concerning what the pineapple logo was all about. Guess some Apple personel are clueless. Anyway I can't say my iPhone G3 works as well as it did. Sometimes when I am in terminal and try to get into settings the settings will crash and I have to click on the icon again. I can't honestly say it is as stable as it once was. It seems a bit slower getting into apps.

Tethering:
The tethering seems to work beautifully. I can have both my Powerbook and my Mackbook Pro tethered wirelessly thru WiFi to my iPhone with no hardwire connections whatsoever; a glorious thing to me. As for the speed it is screaming about twice as fast as my Sprint Expresscard at my home location. I checked the speeds by one of those internet sites. I even got it to work in Bootcamp Windows XP. So I will probably keep the jailbreak and hope future developments will make it more stable. I will experiment more maybe a week with the tethering before cancelling out the EX720 Expresscard with Sprint. I can take the $150 penalty fee with a smile if this tethering thing keeps working as well as it is...:D

But in all seriousness, if you're not sure if you want to, then probably no need. I did it to mine and I love it! But I use it as an SSH client to access my home computer when I'm away as well as the fact that I just enjoy being on the bleeding edge of things. :D
 
I took the plunge, I as well was first a Lil nervous about it but hey no regrets here. You get the best of both worlds apples apps store and cydia apps. And there tons of help if you do mess up on the jailbreak.
 
Finished jailbreaking it and installing NES with 100 roms. It's awesome, I'm stoked.
 
what did i do wrong ..i downloaded it i did everything it said ..but when i went to restore it like it said ..it said restore and upadate ...i did that ...then i tried to back up from tjs iphone and it said cannot do that cause software is corrupt or is not compatable with itunes ...how do i choose the custome firmware?

Apple cannot tell the difference between jailbroken and "virgin" phones. All updates/etc. work fine.

Yes, it does void the warranty.
 
Jailbreak - where can I find the 2.0 itunes firmware?

Just bought a 3G and am screwing up my courage to jailbreak though I'm with ATT. Watched the CNET video on the subject - clear, except the guy says, make sure you have the Itunes 2.0 firmware AND KNOW WHERE IT RESIDES.

The instruction to KNOW WHERE something resides, when I don't, is ever so helpful...

How do I locate and identify this firmware on my MacBook Pro?

The spy glass in the upper right of your screen is the universal icon for search, much like the image of a man with no neck is the universal image for male restroom. Click on it and start typing itunes restore. It should come up.

If apple can't tell the difference, then how is the warranty voided? And can the warranty be un-voided by un-jailbreaking the 3g?

iPhone 3G - Jailbreak 2.2.1

Notes：
1．Before beginning: You must have iTunes 8 installed and you must be on firmware 2.1, if you are not, be sure to update via iTunes.
Also make sure to go into the task manager and disable ANYTHING Apple or iTunes related.
2. WindowsXP user must download the NET Framework version 2.0 （Click to download）
3. WindowsXP user should be sure" Control Panel " －> " Administrative Tools " －> "Ｔelnet ,messenger ,terminal services" (Be sure three services are turned on)

4.Download Firmware 2.2.1 (3G) （Click to download）




Step 1

Make a folder on your desktop & name it Pwnage.Download the Firmware 2.2.1 & Pwnage tool 2.2.5 & place them in Pwnage folder you just created on your desktop:Unzip/Unrar the QuickPwn2.2.5-2.zip file inside the Pwnage folder.

Step 2

Launch iTunes and connect your iPhone 3G to the computer via USB cable.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left side navigation bar. Now hold down shift while clicking the Restore button.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop and select the 2.1 firmware ipsw file. Double click the ipsw file or select it and click the Open button to proceed.

Step 3

Once iTunes has finished upgrading your iPhone 3G to the 2.2.1 firmware you may launch QuickPwn 2.2.5 from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop.

Step 4

Make sure you iPhone 3G is still connected to the computer via USB cable then click the blue arrow to proceed.




Step 5

Click the Browse button to locate your iPhone 3G firmware.






Step 6

QuickPwn will check to verify that the ipsw file is valid. After completetion of the verification, click the blue arrow button to proceed.




Step 7

Selecting（Add Cydia）
This step allows you select what you’d like installed on your iPhone. You have the ability to select Cydia, Installer, and replace boot logos. Once you have made your selections click the blue arrow to continue on. If you want a full jailbreaking experience, installing Cydia and Installer is highly recommended



Step 8

QuickPwn will now ask you to confirm your iPhone 3G is still connected via USB cable before it continues. Click the blue arrow button to proceed.




Step 9

QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.





Step 10

Once QuickPwn detects your iPhone 3G in DFU mode it will begin the jailbreaking process.



Step 11

Once jailbreaking is complete QuickPwn will inform you that it was successfull.
