14 days or 30? The website says 14 days for eligible return.?

It would be pretty sweet to get a double resolution or just to fix the bright corners on the display.

Sorry, I'm hijacking the thread... Im done.

asdfasdf32 - let us know what you decide to do.

I got mine from microcenter. They have return policy of 30 days on everything other than laptops. But I can exchange for another imac basically or get a refund, I buy a lot of stuff there and know a few people there. I can get away without paying a restocking fee as well. LOL

Thats a good deal. 14 days isnt long enough to really put something like this big machine to the test. I'm hoping that there will be some inkling of news at the ipad event on the 2nd but Im not holding my breath.

Let us know what you decide too nkd and I'll do the same.

Thank you so very much everyone, i think i am going for mb pro :) and may get an extra monitor as i will be missing having so much space to work on. :)
I do really love my current iMac, but i do need the portability, and since mb pro is finally as powerful as my imac, i think mb pro will fulfil everything i wanted.
Thank you again ;)

After long deliberation, I've decided to send mine back as well. I fought it. But the luxury of being able to return at this point is a blessing. It'll give me a moment to continue to read about real world reviews on the new MBP. And if I take enough time I might even see the new iMacs appear, and increase my upgrade options. But I like the MBP form factor. I can't deny it. I also can't deny the reason I bought the iMac was for the power, and the desktop form factor was a compromise. One I thought was necessary. But it no longer is thanks to the new MBP. reinstalling OSX now then it's going back in the box and dropped off at Fedex.

Sounds fair- same reasons for me too- :) iMac's power is no longer far ahead of the mbp.

one question tho- Do i HAVE TO reinstall everything? I just deleted all the programs i installed for my previous return (it was faulty, and they are coming to pick it up tmr,) whats the return procedure like? i thought they are going to do all that ...

No. You don't have to do that. I just like to. I had all my music, family photos, financial stuff, on there. To lessen the risk of forgetting to delete something, I just boot from the install disk and take the 30 min to reinstall. Then after the music and intro video play I just turn it off with the button.

You know what's funny though, is I had upgraded my ram to 8gb by adding two sticks. And I left it in there. Lol. I remembered after I had taped up the box. I was pressed for time so I said screw it. 50 bucks. Not too painful. More funny to me than upsetting. :)

Haha i got a funnier story, when i received my current imac, i was taking the extra 8gb RAM(4x2) off the old one, but i didnt know i could just simply pull the tabs, and its that easy- instead i was trying to pull them out with my fingers/ tweezers etc, i finally gave up after an hour- opened up the instruction guide booklet- then finally learnt the lesson.. and obviously i damaged my two RAMs (from the tweezer i think, scratches all over the place...) so £75 gone. quite stupid really...:(

Ouch. Lol. It happens. The tab thing def is a weird design though.

The reason why you feel this is because the MacBook Pros got a refresh. The iMac is reaching its end of life cycle. I understand how some of the benchmarks are discouraging the pride you had for your iMac but you should be aware that the refresh is coming to the iMac soon as well with updated specifications that will outperform the MacBook Pros easily.

If you have another computer you can use for the time being, you should return the iMac and get the refreshed version. If you don't have another computer, then the decision is yours. If you need a desktop, keep the iMac and use it. If you don't need a desktop and the refreshed specs of the MacBook Pros attract you, return the iMac and get a MacBook Pro.

One thing you should be aware also is that it is harder to sell iMacs than MacBooks to people.

If I could do it over again I would buy an i7 Mbp and a 27 inch cinema display. I primarily use my air these days and it would be nice to just plug it into the cinema display and continue working. Then just use the pro when I need the horsepower. In a few years I foresee myself using the iMac exclusively as an external monitor for the latest Mbp.

I did hear a rumor going iMac will actually be 'downgraded' (commercialised?) to make it cheaper rather than going high end- (if u know what i mean. i hope the rumors not true tho!)

I chose imac cus of its superior power, but since mb pro isnt as bad as before, i think it will fulfil all my needs (power/ portability / and if i combine with an external monitor- screen size !)

If you need portability go with the MBP, I did that 3 years ago. Now I am switching to the iMac when they are released because I don't need portability with a computer. I'm back in school and the new iPad will do the trick for the classroom, take notes, jump to a website, record the lecture, etc. I have been using my iPhone for this for the last semester because I wanted to wait for the newer stuff.

The MBP and the external monitor is the best of both worlds, you get the portability that you need and the space when you need that too.

Man, I'm in the same boat now. Really wanted to wait for the new iMac, but the MBPs are pretty good (apart from that stupid SuperDrive), AND I can get a discount on them until the 6th of march. So, unless a new iMac is announced tomorrow, I'll probably go for an MBP, even though I kinda wanted an iMac :(

If you want an iMac, wait for the iMacs. You're gonna kick yourself when you see that the new iMac specs kick the marbles out of the new MBP specs.

Seriously. Don't jump the gun. You'll most likely regret it.

Well yeah, but a 400$ discount on the MBPs is almost too good to pass up. Also, while I do want an iMac, I also kinda want an MBP. it's complicated :D

hahaha i know exactly how you feel lol
but think about it- u get both the portability and power for mbp, imac will be more powerful than mbp but the new mbp will do all the jobs u throw at it. :)
(my current imac 27" i7/2.93Ghz does everything i want it to do, its just that the new mbp is as now powerful as my current imac, and i get the portability i always wanted..) decisions...decisions... (and the new imac wont come out in a month or two-i presume? and i dont want to wait that long..)

It probably won't help you since it's very subjective, but here's a list of pros and cons regarding the iMac vs. MBP decision (I made it for a different thread on this topic).

iMac pros:

- gorgeous screen
- historically (in the past 2-3 years) better performance than the MBP (after the iMac refresh, obviously)
- cheaper than the MBP (though this is lessened somewhat by the discount I could get on the MBP)
- SSD+HDD combination is possible (I'd definitely get that)
- true desktop, no compromises

iMac cons:

- 27" might be overkill for my needs. I mostly work with documents (often side-by-side) and do some photo editing (not professionally though), and I think the 17"-screen would be perfect for that (confirm/deny?)
- Gigantic size. No portability at all. Again, I've been using my MBP as a desktop replacement, but every once in a while it was nice to be able to watch movies on my bed or take it with me on vacation.
- the SSD supplied by Apple will most likely suck. I'm not savvy/daring enough to attempt an aftermarket installation.
- I'd definitely have to relearn some basic things, like operating a mouse :)D), since I'm so used to having an MBP as my main computer.

MBP pros:

- big rebate
- I'm used to the size and feel of MBPs, everything would fall into place immediately. The footprint/weight would be perfect for my desk/room.
- 17" might be the sweet-spot for my particular needs
- can still use it as a portable if the need ever arises
- can install an awesome aftermarket SSD (SATA-III)

MBP cons:

- I'm paying a premium for mobility which I don't really need
- I'm getting an obsolete Superdrive, which I'll never ever use
- Generally pricier than an iMac - maybe also more prone to problems, since it's a portable?
- AppleCare is more expensive than for the iMac

Good thread. I'm in much the same situation but my iMac is 3+ year old dual core that is really showing its age. When the 2011 MBP's came out, I was really tempted given that they compare very well to the current iMacs. I don't need the portability but every so often, it would be nice.

One advantage to the MBPs, if I'm not mistaken, is the easy of upgrading the hard drive. My iMac's HDD crashed a while back and it would have cost over $350 to put a new one in. That was tough to swallow on a desktop that I was going to replace anyway. With my old PC's, it was easy to swap components. Not so much with the iMacs.

While I haven't done it with a MBP yet, it does appear relatively easy to swap a the HDD. Is that a fair comment?

I may just wait to see what the new iMacs look like and then decide. A 15" MPB with the upgraded GPU is tempting though ;).

Yes. It's child's play. This is a major advantage, because you can drop a top-class SSD into an MBP in a matter of minutes, whereas it's a very daunting procedure in the iMac's case.

I'm currently selling my i7 iMac while it is still current in order to get a new i7 MBP. Once the new iMac comes out in a few months I will probably sell the MBP for the iMac, but if portability is your thing, then the MBP is perfect. If not, I don't see how you can come close to the look and performance of the iMac.

I just hated being chained to my desk anytime I wanted to do something computer related. My recording studio is downstairs in my house. Away from my family, my daughters play area upstairs, the kitchen etc.

When I'm recoding that's one thing, but when I'm doing other things like working on family videos, researching stuff, banking online, etc, inlike to be around everyone. Not holed up in my dungeon. The iMac was nice but it just kept me ball and chained haha. A laptop is for me. I'm thankful Apple finally got quads put into the MBP. Now we can have it all (though I do miss that 27" screen).
