I've got a tripod that I bring out on the field when I am out specifically to do wildlife - it isn't the best but I make do! How is this sigma 50-500? I'm looking into it right now.

For what it is, it's an incredible lens, and as long as you have the light for it it's good at 500mm. I'd expect the 150-500 to perform a little better just because it's not such an extreme zoom. Back when I didn't have a long prime, I had a Nikon 80-400 and the Sigma 50-500, and the Sigma was a little sharper than the Nikon at the long end, but the Nikon had better contrast.

In my opinion if you're talking about going from the 55-200 to the 18-200 you're basically going from one "budget" lens with somewhat acceptable quality to another. You're just widening your range.

I would take the advice of the one who shoots mostly nature, compuwar, and look at the 50-500 or the 150-500. In my opinion he tends to be highly critical of lenses.

Calling the 18-200 the mini van of lenses is a great analogy. :)
