This seems like a really good idea -- there are even 3G phones on the AT&T&T&T&T site for FREE when you sign up for a new contract (I'm on Verizon now.)
How do you know which ones are 3G? My old phone was stolen Saturday, and I'm looking for a free / cheap phone to replace it (I'm with AT&T but out of contract).
att webpage..list of phone and the one that has a fireburst icon with 3g on...is 3g
Duh. I guess I didn't see that option on any of the phones I was interested in, so I figured it must have been hidden somewhere that I couldn't see.
I'm not really a fan of any of the phones that offer 3G now, so I guess my next question would be how much it matters for someone who's only going to use the phone as a phone. Is there any danger of GSM being phased out anytime soon?
Does anyone know if buying the phone at a Best Buy affects the ability to redeem my upgrade? I know doing it AT&T is ok, but the phones are much cheaper at BB.
best buy? try amazon...
I would...but i'm worried that the "beginning" of my new 2 yr contract won't come into effect on time. What if I place the order and it doesn't go through until after 6pm on Friday or whenever I activate the iphone.
Do you say try amazon because Best Buy wouldn't work for getting the upgrade or just because its cheaper?
im really interested in seeing if this works... because if so i will be siging up for a voice plan to get a new phone then going and activating my iphone to replace it. and keeping the old one as a backup.... please keep me updated... i probrably wont activate the phone until monday anyway if i get it... so i want to know if this works
I dont think it will work, cause unless u didnt sign a contract. why would you want a new phone? I thought u had Cingular bro. If not just waited out.
I still think it's stupid AT&T doesn't give us something, for a new 2 year contract.

The guy at AT&T told me it "would absolutely work." This is due to the iPhone being unsubsidized and being the exact same price for new customers and existing customers. Since existing customers' current contracts are "reset" to 2 years when you activate the iPhone, there is no harm in starting a new contract right now to get a new phone. The only difference is that you'll have to pay for the few extra days (for example, if you got a free phone today and an iPhone tomorrow, in the end, you'll have one day's worth of charges prior to the iPhone's 2 year contract.)
