I know the old addage if it ain't broke don't fix it. But I was wondering if I should stick with Snow Leopard or upgrade to Mountain Lion? For background I have a 2009 single core MP with OEM ATI 5770. What will I lose by upgrading and what will I gain by upgrading? Thanks in advance.

Get with the times, bro

The reality is that apps are going to start requiring 10.7 soon due to new developer features. Gonna have to move sometime, might as well suck it up and start now. At least 10.8 is much better than Lion.

I like 10.6 too, but at a certain point latching onto 10.6 is going to be like latching onto the PowerPC.

That's my thought too. 10.6 was great, and was really what brought me to Macs. Moving to 10.7 had some growing pains, and I even waited until 10.7.3 to upgrade. But eventually you have to stay current and move on. And like you said, Mountain Lion is really quite nice in its own right. I think Lion really worked out a lot of the bugs for what they wanted to do with Mountain Lion. I have no doubt by 10.8.3 or so it will be just about everything I want from a single OS. Except maybe the 96GB RAM limit, but if a new Mac Pro is in the future I expect that will get lifted eventually.

That is my reasoning for upgrading to ML from SL, gotta do it sometime, don't want to be blast from the past.

Fresh install to ML is working well for me, especially since 10.8.1 fixed the sleep issues. No features of ML stands out to me at all compared to SL, with the exception of being able to highlight Chinese text anywhere, press opt+esc and being able to listen to the text (I don't read chinese too well).

This post caused me to try it again on my Mac Pro. 10.8.1 was unable to go more than an hour or two before random lock ups. My guess is it's related to graphics. Back to SL and just humming along, never locking , running the same programs.

I definitely would have gone back to SL if 10.8.1 didn't fix the sleep issues I had, but thankfully it has been fixed for me. :) Sorry it didn't work for you..:(

Not a problem; that's one of the beauties of a Mac Pro. I have 10.8.1 on another drive/bay ready to be updated to 10.8.2 and will keep trying. Just a matter of setting my boot drive preference. :)

Although I don't own a Mac Pro, I am using Lion on my late 2011 MBP and I absolutely hate it - everything from Apple's decision to hide/lock the user system folder to extremely low battery life (the maximum I can manage is 3 1/2 hours instead of the advertised 7 with integrated graphics).

Before this, I worked with 10.4 Tiger on my G4 and it was great.

I'm actually thinking of downgrading to Snow Leopard once I buy an SSD drive since it seems to have the reputation of being the last best OS for professional use.

Apart from future versions of the CS suite software not working, there's also the question of OpenGL support (or lack thereof for Snow Leopard) beyond 3.2 which could be necessary for 3D new applications to operate. I'd hate to be caught in the bind of having to upgrade up to Mountain Lion and dealing with more iOS crap trying to configure the OS the way I want.

I've upgraded to every new version of OS X quite happily until Lion. I simply think Snow Leopard is the best version right now.

Yes, I'll have to upgrade "sooner or later", but right now I see no advantage to "sooner", whereas I see lots of disadvantages.

i totally skipped Lion and went straight to ML after staying with SL since it came out. Its nice, hasnt broken anything on mine yet, but i havent installed drivers for my Cintiq yet... but yeah the test drive so far has been nice..
