I think MR is the probaly the only place where we can find so many people who advice to upgrade yearly. ?

Let's be real and serious. iPhone is becoming a mature product. Upgrade every 2-3 years minimum, you will have a much better upgrade and you save money.
Every year you gonna have the "best iPhone ever"
When someone on the street would ask me whether he should upgrade his iPhone, I would say: if you have a 5 or older, then yes. 5s or 6 are still OK, but they’re slow and you might miss out on a few things. 6s is still great though occasionally a bit slow. If you have 7 or better, there is no reason to upgrade unless you got too much money.

Now, I’m a tech enthousiast myself so I don't follow my own advice, I have an 8 and I will upgrade to a 12 this year. But let’s face it, MacRumors’ audience is not the average audience. Things almost no one would notice in real-life usage (6GB RAM, 120Hz, LiDAR scanner, 5G) are super important topics here.

I’m using iPhone 11 right now, should I upgrade to iPhone 12, or wait for next year?
There are carrier deals right now. It depends on what the trade in value from your carrier is and if you want to commit to an installment plan. For example, ATT is giving $800 trade in credits for an iPhone 8 and up for 30 month installments on an unlimited plan to existing and new customers.

If you want that beautiful oled screen, thinner and lighter phone, smaller phone while keeping the same size screen then yes.

Exactly... I waited 3 years to go from the 8 to the 11... but decided to pull the trigger on the 12 for all of the above and the 5g connectivity which according to the maps is in good shape here in the Seattle metro area.

Didn't care about the camera differences of the Pro or the 6gb ram... been fine with the 4gb on the 11 so no reason to think the 12 would be any different.

I can see myself keeping the 12 for 3 years like I did with the 8.

Yeah, I have to admit that the recommendations really made me cringe. The 11 is one of the most balanced phones Apple has made but people are recommending to upgrade it? For what?

New Design... that will be hidden behind a case
5G speed... that likely isn’t in your travel area
MagSafe... Faster wireless charging but still slower than a cable
Camera... Deep fusion now on wide lens for all those vacations we go on
Environment... Youre helping the environment by annually buying a new phone
OLED... well, thats actually good. But its not like the old screen was “bad”

I’m upgrading this year so I’m not slamming anyone. Unecessary purchases are part of being a Tech Fan. Its just sad when you step back and see how often we get rid of perfectly good tech in favor of a product that will give you a 5% better experience. Okay, back to waiting for fedex to deliver my $50 silicone case.

As I said in my post the 5g is my main reason for upgrading... and it's all over the place here in Seattle metro. If I lived in backwoods Kansas it would be a different story.

I'm returning my 11 and getting the 12 for the same payment... so basically I rented the 11 for the last year for like $350. Ok, whatever... I'm probably gonna do with the 12 what I did with the 8... and that is keep it for 3 years. I'll have 5g... a solid processor and the new screen (I have a 65" OLED so I know how good they are... but at the same time we are also talking about a phone screen so it's not the same thing. Is it going to look better? Sure. Is it a deal maker for me? Not really, otherwise I'd have done it a couple years ago.)

I actually don't care about the Pro camera improvements... that opinion hasn't changed from last year. As most reviews said... if you're like me the 12 is more than sufficient and will be great for those wanting to run with it for 3 years like I plan to.

To me all this is worth it for the small price of a $350 rental that I paid for the 11.
