Hello,

Looking for advice on how to handle this. I have a 2017 iPP 10.5 that I use primarily as a consumption device. Reading, Youtube, movies, web browsing, messaging. Its treated me very good. However I have 2 problems.
1. The battery is shot. It lasts..maybe 3 hours.
2. My smart keyboard is not working. And it is outside warranty.

I am wondering - what should I do? Should I go for the 11 inch 2020 iPP with Magic Keyboard? How is the Ipad Air? Has it surpassed my 2017 iPP? Should I keep my iPP 10.5 and just pay for new battery and new keyboard?

Thanks

Get the 11-inch 2020 iPad Pro. You will most certainly appreciate ProMotion when web browsing.

Personally, I would just get the battery replaced. I'm in a similar boat, and I've looked at the 10.5 iPad air, but I couldn't go without the dual speakers. I didn't think ProMotion would be a huge factor for me, but having used it now, iPads without it imo look much worse. The 11-inch pros are visually stunning; I had one for a few months. However, I mainly use my iPad to watch movies while I'm laying down, and Face ID just wasn't able to capture my face on a pillow some of the time, which got really tedious eventually.

I am not upgrading my 10.5 pro... battery life is still good but I will replace the battery when it's no longer good... And I am buying the new logitech combo touch with trackpad, which should work basically like the magic keyboard since it was developed in collaboration with Apple. The 10.5 is still an amazing ipad (the speed improvement vs the 11 pro is not that big..) and I plan on keeping it for a very long time as my main ipad... (instead at some point I will upgrade my 12.9 first gen...)
By the way personally, I prefer touch id to face id....

2017 10.5 already has Promotion (it was the gen it was introduced).

OP:If you're hooked on Promotion, go for the 11' 2020 pro, if it isn't a big deal it sounds like you might save a good amount of money simply upgrading to the Air 3. Will be much faster than your old device, much cheaper than a pro, the only downside is you lose Promotion on the Air.

You can toggle it off on your current iPad to see how scrolling on a new Air would feel.

Personally I find the current iPad Pros very appealing - so once my current one goes I’ll get one of the new ones for sure.

OP, you are mostly using it for consumption purposes, so the value is more personal and in the entertainment category - you are the best judge on what that’s worth for you.

Maybe order from Apple or another reseller with a similar return policy and use it during the return window to make an informed decision.

A few options:

Your current iPP 10.5 is still good, perhaps get the new Logitech keyboard, collaborated with Apple, that includes trackpad for $150 USD and also get the apple battery service which $99 USD for Out-Of-Warranty. That's $250.

You could also always buy another 10.5 iPP for about $400 USD as an Apple Certified Refurb if you're hesitant on having Apple open up your iPad, however I'd probably wouldn't do that. Only benefit this would have is that you'd have 2.
And you'd still have to figure out the keyboard, bu buying one of either apple or Logitech.

You could always upgrade to an 11" iPP. Perhaps if you're patient and use refurb tracker, you can score a refurb 2018 11" iPP from Apple themselves for about $550 USD and perhaps find a decent price for a used Smart Keyboard on Ebay for about $80 - $100 USD. This might be the more expensive route of the 3 but it beats the refurb 10.5 iPP and you get the latest look.

Bonus choice: Get the new 2020 11" iPP with the Smart or Magic Keyboard, but then you're looking at about ~1k USD right there for both with only a small upgrade over the 2018 model.

Only you know how much you want to invest in resolving your current issue. Personally, I'd got with option 1 or 3.

I was debating between iPad Pro 10.5”, iPad Air 2019 and iPad Pro 2018, upgrading from iPad Air 2. I ultimately went with the 10.5” because it is the cheapest and offers what I value most - stereo speakers and promotion. My use case is very similar to yours. I tried the pro 2018/2020 and yes they are fast but not that much faster than 10.5” for our use case. I don’t like that the Air does not have Promotion nor stereo speakers. I don’t have any regrets. If you can find iPad Pro 2018 for less than $500, maybe it is worth it.

Agreed, Apple Certified Refurb 11" iPP or even brand new for less than $500 USD should be a must, otherwise 10.5" iPP all the way. I wouldn't bother with the iPad Air for the reasons you've mentioned. lol

Bestbuy has the Smart Keyboard for you 10.5 iPP for $99 USD today (05/21/2020) only. Might want to get one before they sell out.

Yes. They don't have the capability to do iPad battery replacements in store.

Yeah you're right. Been a while since I had to do that so I forgot they just saw em out. I'm fairly certain that it's not a 'new' device that they will give you though, especially since it's a product line with 2 newer revisions. It's gonna be an Apple Certified Refurbish that they use as warranty replacements, I believe.

But that's just mere speculation at this point.

just bought one. Ill get the battery service and ride this out another year or 2 before upgrading

Nice! That's good to hear. My gf is still rocking her 10.5 iPP and I doubt she's gonna want or need an upgrade in the coming 2 years or so either.

Cert could be even better for 10.5 because they inspect the device thorouhly

only if you plan to draw, otherwise a keyboard and mouse/trackpad does everything better

Oh no Apple refurbs are great. It's basically brand new, (new battery and outshell, i.e. casing and screen)
Sometimes Apple refurbs are superior when comparing to their new counterparts considering what product it is because they might have fixed a known issue that you can potentially get from a new device. (i.e. refurb iMac Pro vs new iMac Pro)

Like, Wackery noted, only if you plan on drawing. It is not a pertinent accessory for media consumption and of the like, though it might be useful for productivity such as the notes app, but I wouldn't recommend it solely for that purpose.

I couldn’t wait, because taps weren’t being recognized, and just got a new Pro 11.

Not that much faster than my 11, but a very nice device.

Will apple replace my Smart Keyboard that randomly works sometimes and randomly doesn’t? For 10.5 iPP

I had mine replaced a while ago for my 9.7 pro, there’s literally no downside to complaining to apple support, so give it a shot

Still loving my second gen 12.9 but considering the next iPad Pro refresh. Just wasn’t impressed by the 2020 models and was hoping for something really impressive. Plus it gives me more time to sock away for a higher capacity model.

For me the turning point of getting the ‘new design’ ipad pro will be OLED or mini LED for better night time viewing, otherwise I’m fine with a 10.5 pro.
