Looking at the fan it's one of the new acoustically shaped ones from the rmpb range. Hence the extra silence
i know this is about the new mini but...
i just did the "yes > /dev/null" test on my 2011 mac mini server. cpu load goes to 100% by the eighth instance of the test process. my modified server stays absolutely silent during that load. fan speed does not ramp up from the set minimum of 2300rpm.
Are sure that all of your CPU cores hits %100 with only one run of "yes >/dev/null"?
Looking at the fan it's one of the new acoustically shaped ones from the rmpb range. Hence the extra silence
no, it needs eight instances of the process as i previously stated.
But the Mac Mini IS ridiclously quiet.
Update: I installed iStat and it tells me that the fan is at 1803rpm.
Guess it really IS that quiet which is fantastic![]()
Same here, it sometimes jumps up to 2200rpm if i've got a few things open. When manually changing fan speeds it stays silent right up until 3000ish![]()
How do you manually change the fan speed?
111F is not very hot. The Intel processors used in Macs are designed to automatically shut down to prevent damage if they truly overheat. CPU Tjmax = 105C (221F), GPU Tjmax = 100C (212F) on i3, i5, i7 processors. (Source: Intel)I have the base model (stock for now) and did a HandBrake encode that lasted approximately 60 mins. My temps climbed to about 111 F, but the fan rotation speed never exceeded 1870 rpm. I could not hear the fan spinning!

My point wasn't about temperature, it was about silent fan operation. With my previous mini's, increased temps meant increased fan rotation and audible noise. Not getting that so far with the new model.

Ripping a BD now using MakeMKV. Temperature was 49C at idle, now it's around 51~53C. Only thing I hear is the disc spinning. Using the BRP-U6CK drive from IO DATA.
Fire up activity monitor and see what your cpu % is when running MakeMKV.
