If I get a paid day off, then yes! In fact, let's have a paid national holiday for every CEO in America and get every day off!

Um...

Tony
There is already a day when people take a day off from work and they usually don't get paid for it - iPhone launch day

Only if Mac users get a day of paid vacation. :p

We don't have an Edison Day, an Einstein Day, or a Mother Teresa Day. Steve was great, he was a true visionary and innovator, but we don't need another silly bank holiday.

Should there be a "Steve Jobs Day" national holiday?

On the news, they are talking about making October 14 "Steve Jobs Day". In my opinion, this is starting to take things a bit too far. Giving him a national holiday and putting him on an equal platform with men like Christopher Columbus, Martin Luther King and George Washington is bordering on the ridiculous.

I was reading about this about 6 hours before Apple announced Steve's passing. It's not a national holiday, just SJ fans wanting to honor their idol. You heard about this after his death and assume a national holiday is being planned. Not so.

The United States has no national holidays. There are federal holidays (which are only for the District of Columbia and federal employees), and there are also state holidays in individual states.

I don't think it's a good idea anyway.

Which would have no actual basis in reality since the country is nearly bankrupt. But you were making a tasteless joke anyway, so I understand your motivation.

Who cares if the country is bankrupt! All that matters is Apple!! As long as they have another record quarter, the world is good. The notion of a national holiday for a corporate figure is tasteless.

I would love to see a national day celebrating the bounties of capitalism and the genius of entrepreneurs such as Edison, Hughes, Jobs and other wealth-creators.

Jobs' is a uniquely American story, and worth celebrating as an inspiration, but as one among many who sprouted from America's fertile soil.

I know that I will get stomped for this but I do not think we should have Martin Luther King day. He was not an elected official. He was simply a citizen. He did great things but if we are going to have a day for one unelected civil rights leader that was assasinated then we should have a Robert Kennedy day too. He championed civil rights, was assasinated and was chosen by the people.

Not a national holiday for Steve Jobs?
I see it practical and realistic , we celebrate holidays in the name of people we cant even be 100% sure been born on the day we celebrate their birthday , even the calender we use is based on that flaw
So why not a Steve Jobs Day

Yea, Steve is right up there with Lincoln and Washington, isn't he?

I say do away with these jingoistic national holidays. In fact do away with nations - John Lennon was right. Imagine no countries!

We have lots of holidays that are not based on civic contributions or elected position, such as Columbus Day and Thanksgiving. And you're about 28 years late to that party; MLK Day was law in 1983. RFK would have been a great president, but he was only "chosen" as a Senator by the people of New York (and contrary to the popular belief, there is a vast, somewhat civilized wilderness that exists outside the state boundaries).

But shouldn't that be a work day then, to be true to the spirit?

I really love capitalism, but there's a sharp edge on the other side of that blade too.

Only a macrumors retard would ask such a stupid question. Again what was his great contribution to the world.

He did more with the civil rights movement in a short time than your saint Jobs did in his entire life. It's an outrage even mentionioning the two in the same sentence.
