I have a Macbook 2.0Ghz. 1g of ram. (I did all the updates.)

This happened a couple times with my new Macbook:

I turned off the computer ( power off ). Then later i found out that the machine was still hot. The computer was OFF, not on sleep (sleep LED was NOT on), I turned it OFF. But the machine was still running, i guess the hard drive was still running/on, i should say that.

I was like what the hell? Then when i press the start bottom, it won't turn on. I had to hold down the start bottom for a few seconds, to start the computer. After successfully loading OSX, it showed an error message "OSX was quit unexpectedly......".

Any experts out there know what is going on here? Any suggestions?

Thank you very much.

Something interrupted the shutdown sequence (a program that wouldn't close, or whas waiting for a response to a dialog) but you closed the lid before it had shut down. It remained running in clamshell mode, waiting patiently for whatever it was waiting for, until you force quite it much later by holding down the power button. Then it restarted and told you that you had force quit the OS un-gracefully.

the computer was off. shut down. power off. turn off.

everything was quit... no programs was running. all the CAD and graphic, web, music, office programs. Vecterworks, SketchUp, CS2. Studio 8... etc... nothing was on. (quit).

I have been a Mac user for years. I don't think i'm turning into a retard, "don't know how to shut down a computer". Haha...

Once again. It was shut down. Hours later, i tried to relocate the macbook, i picked it up... I was like "no way... again. the machine is still running? the hard drive is still one? why is it hot." I say Hot, the temperature was like a normal running laptop. Warm...hot...

Very frustrated! I'm going to the apple store on Sunday.

y the way, i went to the Apple store ( Sacramento, California ) this afternoon. I spoke to the "Mac Genius". They have never heard anything like this before, they thought i didn't know how to use a Mac, shut up a computer. They were telling me all those Bullcrap about quiting programs... wait till the computer is really shut up... blah blah blah. Basically, they didn't know anything.

Whatelse they didn't know:
I asked him about my G5 2.7 wake from sleep fan problem. ( the fan speeds up a little bit whenever i awake the computer from sleep, it would stay at a fast RPM. Not a huge deal. After 10.4.4 update, it got screwed. )

I'm very disappointed at the so call "Mac Genius" people. I think i know more than those "wanna be Genius people" at the Sacramento Apple store.

Oh, check this out: I was trying to show that Joker this discussion, homie was like "oh, i don't need to read that...."

What a shame! Is this the way to help people? I hope people from the Arden Fair, Sacramento Apple store read this. Train your home-boys the guys with long hair, light blonde/brown, early 20's.

Well, problem is not solved. I'm waiting for the fourth Shut Down, but still running problem. Then, someone tell me what i should to the that Home-boy?

Thank you.
Sorry about that... I wasn't happy at all. Horrible service!

OK, so we don't have enough information to answer you.

If that's all the information you gave the Apple Store too, then it's not surprising that they started from the same assumptions. Did you take the machine in and demonstrate your shutdown procedure and could you reproduce the "staying on" behaviour?

Logically, then, either the machine is not shutting off when you choose the Shut Down command. Or it is autonomously starting up while shut.
You need to find out what is causing that. It could be software or hardware.

At anyrate, good luck fixing it. Bye.

There is a thread at Apple's own discussion board about this issue. Apparently a few people have experienced this.

Indeed, i did everything... "You need to find out what is causing that. It could be software or hardware."

I don't have any addtional software but MS word. That's it. I have no idea what is going on.

I'm not the only person experiencing this problem. There are many out there, check the apple discussion.

I don't know whatelse to say...

I just posted this in another forum as this was the only other thing I could think of at this point.

"I know this may sound completely unrelated, but we are talking about software here, so give this a try. In the Energy Saver portion of System Prefs, make sure the Wake option for ethernet admin access is unchecked for both the battery and the power adapter. I know, it's a stretch, but I believe that was enabled by default, and I haven't had this issue and I unchecked that option when I first got my MB."

Me, too.

This has happened to me, twice, with my new Macbook. I've just taken out the battery and then put it back in again. Is that a bad idea?

sadly i am also experiencing the exact same problem. I have a 2ghz 13' macbook. This has happened twice and both times i have been sure the machine has shutdown. Its a worrying problem as i keep my macbook in a laptop bag whenever im not using it so when ive found it running, theres been some serious heat buildup. going to the apple store tomorrow and see what they have to say. will let u know

I have the exact same problem. It's quite alarming, as I'm sure the extreme heat can really damage the notebook! I hope Apple fixes this soon!

the same thing happend to me twice also, i have my macbook 2 weeks now
i called apple care today and he said they never heard of this before, so he went to his tech guy he never heard of it either, he wanted me to pull the battery and hold down the power button for 7 sec, and then replace battery.

he also wanted me to update firmware but i had no internet connection at work today....

Personally, I have all the newest firmwares (unless there's an update not covered by the Software Update panel), and all the newest software updates as well. I have reformatted today, and reinstalled my old prefs, and I'll let you know if there's any noticeable differences. Though it generally sounds more like a hardware/firmware problem to me.

OK...I think I figured this out. When shutting down the MacBook, if you close the lid just as the screen goes black, it gets confused, and somehow doesn't shut down properly. If you then open the lid, it's in some weird started up, but black screen status. Then you have to manually kill it by holding the power button. I think this is exactly what I have been seeing.
When you do this, and close the lid too soon, the power light stays on steady, and of course, the notebook can get very hot. So be sure to wait about 5 seconds after the screen goes black before shutting the lid!

Well this happened to me too. only once though. I guess the problem was that I closed the lid just a lil bit early than I should have. I think your MB is running with lid closed coz of this reason only. IMO the problem is that MB doesnt actually shut down completely for atleast 4-5 seconds after the power LED turns off. We just assume that the MB is turned off by seeing the LED off and close the lid. But it actually is not completely off and the HDD/fans extra still keep spinning. I`ll try repeat it and confirm once I log back in OSX(running crap XP rite now to install some software on my Pocket PC btw:eek: .)

I'm experiencing the same problem. My 2.0 MacBook with 1 G RAM sometimes keeps running after shutdown until the battery is totally drained. Last incident included a kernel panic and when I was able to restart battery was at 45% (it was 100% when I shut it down earlier). Customer care is sending a replacement battery and I'm only running on AC power until it arrives. I ran the diagnostic test and no problems were found. My 14 days aren't up and I've made a record of the problems with apple so even if I go beyond 14 days, once I've lived with the new battery for a while, I can still return or replace it.

You should be sure to read my post above. Using that tip seems to have solved it for me. I've been going for a few days without any problems. It doesn't look like any hardware problem which needs replacing...just a couple seconds of extra waiting at shutdown time.

(BTW, sorry if this gets double posted; I don't think my last post made it up.)

Ditto for me too

I'm having the same problem mentioned here. MacBook 2Ghz with 1 gig of ram. The machine has DEFINITELY been shut down, not put to sleep - screen is black - I put it in it's tote case, come back some time later pull the machine out - it's as hot as a pistol and the battery is either completely discharged or very nearly so. As a matter of fact I think it's safer until Apple fixes this to put the machine to sleep, it does't get hot then and I haven't had any problems with coming out of sleep mode on it's own (so far).

I had the same problem, but now I just wait untill the screen goes black and then close the lid. I did have the problem only when I closed the lid early.

Just out of curiosity, when you are shutting it down, do you do it through the Apple menu or are you using the power button to turn it off?

I'm not sure if you were asking me but I always go to the apple and press shut down.I don't use the power button for shut down.
