It seems there are some who have had really bad luck with these things. My MacBook is my first Apple computer, and I can tell you if I had any of these problems it would be out the door and it would be my last Apple purchase of any kind! These kind of problems have no excuse. :(

I agree that these problems are a major issue, however, they do happen, especially considering that the MacBook is a mass produced product. It is impossible to have a 100% error free product every time, mistakes and errors do occur. Thats why there is a warantee on the computers, and the producers offer support.

1 or 2 yea, but i have a total of 4 in 6 months...... NO QC at all.. I went back to my HP aand will wait till they get better!

That sounds like plain old bad luck. The fact that you got 4 broken ones doesnt mean the entire series is horrible quality. It is unfortunate, but in no way an indicator that all apple computers are a mess.

What OS is she working in? I have that problem when I'm using XP. Did you say it only happens if she closes it in sleep mode. Then just don't close it. But you should save every 15 minutes, no sympathy. It doesn't happen all the time does it and it is easily remedied... SAVE! It's not just crashing in the middle of programs so live with it. All computers develop little problems over time. Life sucks.

my wife lost 2 days worth of work yesterday when the macbook just restarted by itself when she closed the lid. just like it's been doing for 2 months.

this is god damn ridiculous. the apple store said it's fine, cause i couldn't reproduce the issue on the spot. i did not blow nearly $2000 for this kind of **** service and product.

apple is losing a 10 year customer with this.

If it gives you any comfort you're not the only one. My PB on seldom occasion will be shut off at some point after I close the lid. I know when I open it up and when it doesn't wake I end up putting my ear to it to listen for the fans. Not sure what causes it.

well i called up applecare. at first she tried to charge me $50 or sell me applecare extended, but i just cut right to the point.

she said take it to the apple store, and they will be waiting for it to ship to cupertino or wherever the repairs go.

I probably should've just returned it for a new one when i noticed this problem after i first got the book in dec, but the hassle of a custom order, coupled with the sporadic nature of the problem and suspicions that it may have been software related kept me at bay. but this little incident pissed me off. it's just the ridiculousness of it - cold restarts just because you closed the lid! really, wtf?

I don't make generalizations like that because I have issues like that all the time everywhere. My Compaq randomly restarted. My Dell has had numerous issues. A laptop is not perfect. It happens.

I completely understand why the store can't help a problem they can't see. The repair facilities can.

god damn't! just got my macbook back from apple. they replaced the entire screen with a new one, fixing an unrelated issue involving a flickering backlight, but....

MY POS MACBOOK JUST RESTARTED AGAIN BY ITSELF FROM CLOSING THE LID!!!!!!

I mean, wtf? What do I have to do to get this fixed? Is it that hard to figure out?! And just after the restart, I got one of those "You must press the power button to restart the computer" kernal panic screens. I'm seriously getting to the point where I'm wondering if I should complain to the BBB over this nonsense. For a $2200 computer, this is utter BS.

That's pretty awful. I had a horrible time trying to get them to repair my Powerbook, and had a similar experience where every time I got it back, something new was broken. Call 'em back, and try to escalate so you get a product specialist, they seem to know more about how to help you.

Also, how did a MacBook cost $2200? I've maxed out a black one, and I come up to $1800 or so.

I've confirmed this: office autorecover backup is set to every 10 minutes. it works. however, it doesn't work when the file is stored on an idisk. don't know why; it just doesn't.

You shouldn't be working off an iDisk anyway! I have an iDisk and it's great for backups and storage, but I never work off of it.

That's why she isn't saving. Doh! Besides, you say this has been a periodic problem. Isn't that better reason for her to develop better save habits?

I feel like I'm working off a USB stick and for some reason those things get corrupted when you do that - at least they are more likely to. I know because I teach technology and a set of kids lost their entire project in my presence when their stick died.

quite a few people are jumping on the save issue. that's not what i intended this thread to be about.

what i care about is paying thousands of dollars for something that has such a ridiculous malfunction, only to learn, after numerous tech calls and sending the damn thing to apple, is a "feature."

Apple should allow this "Safe Sleep" nonsense to be user configurable in the energy management settings, or get rid of it all together.

i previously thought the long sleep activation times were just part of going to intel. Then on top of that, if the laptop isn't perfectly still when it's going to Safe Sleep, it'll restart. Like I have time to dick around waiting for my laptop to properly "safe sleep" at the airport security check!

Badly done, Apple.

Command+S

Perhapse your wife should look into a Lisa, they are save proof.

Would people please give the "Save" thing a rest? It wouldn't matter how long she went between saves, the MacBook shouldn't be spontaneously restarting. Period. Saving more often won't make that problem go away.

That's partially because some people on this board read one post and then reply, regardless if the thread is 1 page or 500 pages long. Should she have better save habits? Yup, and you have even admitted that. Hopefully this will help her learn better habits if nothing else comes of it. Forgive them, for they only wish to bloat their post count.

Well it seems to me that the feature is not the issue, rather something else.

Apple should allow this "Safe Sleep" nonsense to be user configurable in the energy management settings, or get rid of it all together.
I agree, or at least release a Apple doc for how to disable the mode.

I thought the long sleep time was an Intel change as well, that is until I read your post. Needless to say my MB is now set in mode 0.:) Anyways, I haven't had this issue personally, but you are waiting a least a second or so before moving the MB for the HD to park the heads after your close the lid, correct? I am thinking that the if the previously mentioned scenario was the case it could be the sudden motion sensor borking things. Either way I hope you get it worked out.

I find Office 2004 to be very flaky, and poor when compared to its windows counterpart. The bullets and numbering feature is shaky at best. But maybe thats just cause i'm running through Rosetta, but still its just an office app.

I hope 2008 is not like this, or i'll be going open office.
