I've recently been playing alot of Sid Meier's Civilization V again and I keep enjoying it.
It's a Turn Based Strategy game for PC and Mac, and it's also turn based.
This is one of the very few games which you don't have to rush and pay 110% attention to and it's just one of my favorite games all time.
It also has Steam Workshop and open and free modding for the fanatics!

Here is a gameplay video of mine which I made today.

Thanks for coming to my topic and I hope I got anyone into this game with my thread :)

cool:

Always found Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri to have superior game play, especially with the Alien Crossfire expansion. Still play it once in a while - 13 years later!

I find in all the Civ games the wonders are a bit too powerful. For certain styles of game play, if you don't get a specific wonder, you had better change plans or restart the game... Granted, I haven't played V, only I-IV and Alpha Centauri.

IV is always fun to play with friends, until you find one of your buddies with machine guns and you have swordsman. ;)

Dave,

If you want to read something of a theoretical basis for the sequences of "inventions" in CIV, then try and find a copy of "Guns, Germs and Steel" - see : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guns,_Germs,_and_Steel.

I've been playing CIV for years and years. When I found this book this year I was amazed at how it reads like CIV - except it isn't a game.

Thanks for the good read, I've noticed the similarity in these two. :D

This. I love the Civ games. Even 5, which apparently is the love it or hate it entry of the series.

But none of them come close to the glory of Alpha Centauri. They could rerelease the game every 10 years, updating nothing but the graphics and UI, and I'd buy it each and every time.

In short, what things do people hate about Civ 5?

I ask because I am seriously considering buying it. The last time I bought and played any Civilization game was.... many eons ago, I think Civ 2 or 3? It's the one with the Elvis impersonator and Norman Schwarzkopf as the Military Advisor.

Maybe that was in the 1990s? Been playing games for a long time heh.

Didn't care for Alpha Centauri (and I think MOO stole most of the fame and glory in that era). I was greatly entertained by SpaceWard Ho in those days.

If I had to take a guess, it'd be that 5 gets kinda boring towards the end game. Civ 4 got really hectic and interesting when you reached the modern era, whereas 5 it's just you playing your advantages and keeping your course steady until you win the game. Though from what I hear, the two expansions (that I haven't played yet) do a lot to fix this.

edit: oh, and the AI can occasionally be a little dumb.

The one nicest thing about 5 is how much better combat is. See, I always played peaceful civs in 4 because going to war was a chore. You churned out your units, made a couple stacks 'o doom, and sent them on their way. In Civ 5, you can't stack military units, so have to take positioning, formations, and tactics into account more.

In Civ 4, I was a pacifist, always trying to win through trade and culture. Civ 5? It made being a bastard fun.

Yeah, we're all crotchety and old here. :p

The one thing I liked most about AC was how weird and cool it was, and how it made you feel like you were colonizing another planet. It's harder to come to terms with than the other Civ games, because...hey...you know what advantages the wheel, steel, and literacy can bestow upon your kingdom, but...

...what the hell do Bioadaptive Resonance and Polymorphic Software do?

most of us hate civ 5, and then it grows on us as we notice how to play it differently. i had a thread on here where i asked why it wasnt fun like the earlier versions. however im enjoying it more. just had to realise that instead of churning out huge armies, what i really need is just a smaller amount of artillery to bash the crap out of cities and some infantry to sit in front of them and make sure they dont get killed.

what dont i like about it?

i agree with the other poster, theres a lot more of long periods where you (as a non expert player) are randomly choosing things to build as your just chugging along, especially in the later stages....

i hate this daft idea of your units swimming across oceans, far preferred building boats to carry them

some people say differently, but i find that civ 5 is much more about smaller civilisations, this has been a trend since civ 4, its harder to rapidly expand. its probably more realistic and makes the game deeper but civ 1 to 3 i loved to build vast empires as quickly as i could. playing civ 1 as america and blocking mexico and being able to build 20 cities one after another... even when you go onto civ forums they say the best way of playing it is 4 or 5 cities.

and theres no exciting will i, wont i, 2 countries evenly matched piling into a big war, your either well ahead and will win, or you arent.....

civ 1 for me was the daddy. im sure if i went back to it it wouldnt age well but at the time, it ruined my degree

I like it better because it seems, well...not necessarily more realistic, but more interesting. Like you're managing an empire through a few large seats of power, rather than slapping a ton of cities four grid blocks away from each other to minmax the hell out of everything.

Maybe it's because I'm a micromanager when it comes to these types of games, but having a few centers to work off from you can constantly improve upon is a lot better than having a map full of random little towns you don't plan on doing anything with.

I've played all Civ games, from Civ 1 on a Mac IIsi back in the early 90s.
I have probably played many 100 hrs of Civ1, almost as much Civ2 and after that I kinda lost the interest. I have played a few games with Civ3 and Civ4, but it never was that fun.

I have played quite a bit Civ5 however, mostly because I have some friends that plays it multiplayer. I've done this from time to time and it's a great social multiplayer game (we're old friends, and the social aspect with friends that have moved to a different city is just as important).

I've been playing Crusader Kings2 a lot lately tho, well that is around 50 hours last month, still on my first game...
It's a bit like Civ, but much more focus on your dynasty, your heir and making alliances and marrying off your daughters to the right family.

Most people I know like Civ4 better than Civ5 until they figure Civ5 out.

There is no stacking of units in the game and it takes awhile to build up your military so the military strategies are different then Civ 4.

I prefer Civ5 over Civ4 because it's not build / stack a lot of units then zerg the enemy. You are forced to think and use strategy to succeed (i.e. Civ5 can be a more challenging game then Civ4).

Just bought civ V gold edition at steam last week because it was 75% off! The game is like starcraft II without the need for fast hands. Learning to play it though takes a while.

I picked it up over the weekend via the App Store. I really like the fact that it can be on all our Macs now and we can play together for one price.

I really like the game, though my 2012 MBP gets REALLY warm even with fans maxed with the GeForce 650M card. The wife started playing it on her 2013 MBA and it isn't nearly as warm with her HD5000 card.

I may try to run it with the HD4000 and see if it hinder performance too much and maybe it would help the temps.

Really fun game and I like that you don't have to be in a time crunch compared to other games like Warcraft, Starcraft and the like.

Though, wish catapults and the like had a better range than the archer units.

Really enjoying it still!
Made an episode playing the Large Islands map!
Here it is:

It's really fun because you have to embark the sea first and it changes everyones strategy also :D

Planning on getting Brave New World in any future sale!
That's a good way to mix it up a bit, shame though that the AI is quite dreadful at naval battles or planning invasions on other continents.
