Just picked up an Apple leather case and I initially thought I had a dud button on the case. But no, I took it off and the button is definitely mushy at the lower end, and more clicky at the top. In fact, if I press the bottom of the button it doesn’t work at all. The volume buttons are perfect, however. It also seems to be a bit more pronounced once inside the case. I’ll see how I go but I might return it - a phone over £1000 should be perfect.

If the bottom of the button doesn't work at all, then it's defective. I would return it versus just considering it as you stated.

I first noticed my issue using the apple leather case too. There's no satisfying click like you get with the volume buttons. I stopped using that case and now I'm living with the Caudabe Sheath. It's still not as clicky as I'd like it, but at least its not getting any worst.

Please update us on whether you return the phone and how Apple dealt with it.

I’ll visit my local store and have a play with the demo phones. If they don’t feel similar I’ll bring it up.

Did a quick search and couldn’t find anything on this.

Recieved my iPhone X this morning and after some playing around I’ve noticed that the side button (lock/Siri/Apple Pay button or whatever you want to call it) isn’t uniformly clicky.

What I mean is that if I press the top of the button I get a nice tactile click but if I press the middle or lower on the button it’s quite a bit mushier without that reassuring click. It’s the same with or without a case on.

I’m hoping it’s just a case of wearing it in but has anyone else experienced this?
My volume down button is less clicky, towards the bottom of the button. The volume up and power button are uniform. As usual, the lottery is big, and, we could play it and end up with something worse (like my first unit which had a clicking back - now that, was not tolerable)!

Thanks Apple, it’s always something to help my OCD!

Hello "CJM", I have purchased iPhone X one month ago, I experience the same issue"lower end of power button is mushy" - I recently checked this issue and i do not know whether it is existing since day one................Have you visited the service center? and what did Apple confirm? Is this the problem with the button or is it normal? Please do reply

Didn't do anything about it, just learned to live with it. It's still the same as when I first got the phone last November, so at least it's not gotten any worse.

Mine button is weird too. It has a nice click at the top and middle portion but at the bottom the button gets mushier and nasty clicking. Idk whether I should live with this or not cause exchanging it would be a major hassle.

The seal might be not seated properly. Have Apple inspect it.

Do you think that’s the case? Nearest Apple store is 3hours away from me and I wouldn’t want to go through such hassle.. Let me explain a bit more, the button seems to be not even, top portion protrudes a tiny bit more than the bottom portion. And the nasty, mushy loud click happens only when I’m pressing on the very edge of the button with a fingernail. Othervise button seems to be solid. Edit. It seems that this is not a frequent issue, I tried pressing it now just the same way and it doesn’t feel like that sometimes. But the tilted angle of the button remains. It’s very subtle tilt, almost unnoticable.

Truthfully, I wouldn’t waste your time driving three hours to the Apple Store to have them inspect your button. If you think it progressively becomes worse, then you can call them by phone, you can send your phone in for repair and they will send a replacement device for you to use in the meantime awhile they inspect/repair your phone, which would save you the driving to an Apple store which basically could be over nothing.

Remember, not every button will have the same tactile feedback as every other phone, sometimes they are manufactured to be the same tolerance, but they have a slightly different tactile feel.

;( my $1300+ iPhone XS Max is doing the same thing a week after I bought it. Definite loss in clickiness. Steve Jobs went to great lengths to make sure there’s premium look and feel to their products, including clickiness haha. Don’t lose that apple!

The problem is there’s a difference in tactility in the same device after a small amount of time after purchasing.

Although that’s pretty funny, the more nobody cares about premium products staying premium quality...the more the companies will start charging premium prices for not so premium quality. Gotta hold our guns for $1000+ phone prices.

When I got my XR, I noticed the power button click was one octave higher when you press the bottom half, I've been so depressed ever since. My therapist suggested breathing exercises to cope with the anxiety, but the panic attacks keep coming. It's like they sneak up on me when I think I've gotten over it. Perhaps past episodes with the TV remote and Xbox controller buttons still haunt me? My next appointment is Friday; week by week, we're going to get through this.

Especially if it’s going to change the water proofing from a seal not working correctly!
