Using a cMBP 2012 16GB and 2 TB Samsung 850...

ran without problems with the last version of ElCap as with the last version of Sierra as well.
subjectively Sierra seems to be faster (especially using safari) and "snappier" .

But I did NOT a scientific comparative test of both, just my everyday-personal impression...

We need benchmarks. We don't have a good point of comparison without them.

I did same benchmark El Capitan/High Sierra on old MacBooks with old Macbench. Not sure how 32/64 bit things can affect results. I did several runs.

MacBook Pro early 2008, H Sierra installed with patch tool. It fixed USB driver problem under El Capitan but graphic performance degraded a lot:
Quartz 50 % slower on HS
OpenGL 20% slower on HS
User interface 2/3 slower on HS

MacBook Air late 2010 officially supported, 2GB RAM
Quartz 45 % slower on HS
OpenGL 45 % faster on HS
User interface 40 % slower on HS

That are my unscientific findings.

I have a 2009 IMac 27 in. 2.8 GHz, I7 with 12 GB of ram, and it's slow with High Sierra, I dual boot with El Captain on a LaCie external drive, El Captain is faster and works better.. I had Sierra on it and it was not too bad, wish I had not upgraded..

Which Benchmarks you used?

As is stated there. Macbench.

You mean McBench5.0? That's stopped development since 2014. I don't think it can keep up with the latest hardware, especially Quartz performance often wrong, same as Xbench 1.3.

The OS use METAL to render UI now. And There are much more up to date METAL, OpenGL, OpenCL benchmarks which should provide more accurate results.
