I was just cleaning out my drawer yesterday and I just saw my receipt for my old Powermac G4 Dual 1 Ghz. It was almost the same price as a quad G5. That's just sad. And the G5 has so much more than the G4...bigger HD, more ram, better graphics...I know it's like this with all technology, but it really stabs you in the heart when you see compare a receipt. I guess the "wealth effect" (if you've taken economics) is in place ah?

Having just given away my 17" NEC monitor which ran me ~$2,000 in 1993, I feel your pain. My $3000+ IIci, sitting in the basement with $600 worth of added RAM (a whopping 16MB) and the $600 Apple 1X CD-ROM... they all make me understand.
Now this is what I am talking about!
Me personally, I am just lucky I have a Rev A Dual 1.8Ghz with the 8 slots, ATI9800, PCI-X and I upgraded the superdrive to a DL. And in two years + I am still thinking I can get almost what I paid for it. (when I used the student dev discount of course)

Okay, so I don't actually <3 work, but I <3 the fact that they provide me with a PB.
Years back... over $2000, if I remember right, for a Sony VAIO desktop, 233 mHz. I thought that we were in the space age or something back.

And on topic, mum's recent powerbook (rev d 15") cost ~$3500, whereas the one I'm typing on cost over $5000 (I think). It was much more special for it's time, but now it gets the crap kicked in from newer systems
OK, figuring that a Dual 1.0Ghz powermac is less powerful than a 1.5Ghz mini. That means a $3800 computer is about as powerful as a $600 computer that comes along 3.5 years later...
OK. More realistically, how about the strategy of buying a 1 year old, mid-level PowerMac every 2 years instead of buying a top of the line one every four years, for example. Probably cheaper and you'll have better average performance over the 4 years.

My first cell phone, what was that, like $500.
Now you get a phone for free when you buy a plan, or every two years.
What about a scanner, I bought one years ago and it was $300, now you can buy them for $50.
What about Digital Cameras. Remember those Sony Floppy Disk cameras that cost $400.

That is technology, and what matters is that you got to use the Mac back then to make more money and also have fun while at it.
Think of what you are spending now, in a year to 3 years it would seem overprices. However what are you doing with your system today is what matters.

Being resourceful and intelligent in getting a discount, nice. Even though to a point its illegal. Bah who cares.
And that's exactly why you should try and buy the cheapest computer you can get by with, and use the cash to upgrade more often. You end up with a faster machine on average, it's not such a huge (still big though i guess!) disaster if your machine dies.
Unless it's someone else's money paying for it. Then you should get a quad G5, Dual 30" displays and 16 Gig of RAM with fibre channel and and xRaid.
