My decision will be influenced on how well iOS 12 runs on my iPhone 7 Plus. I really want wireless charging so I may get the 8 plus, but I can’t justify spending a bunch of money for things that aren’t really necessary.

That’s absolutely fair. However you asked what the new phone could do that your 8 Plus can’t. I simply replied with examples. Had you asked what the new phone could do that would render your 8 Plus as no good, or blow the doors off of it, that would have warranted an entirely different answer. I’m not expecting anything major either and I also have used an 8 Plus the last year. I didn’t like the size of X. But if a larger screen is offered, with a better processor, improved camera, better Face ID, etc, no matter how incremental, they’ll still be things that improve on both the X and 8 series. For many that’s not enough to warrant an upgrade. I understand.

I get it, but also to be fair, none of that is really anything new that my 8 Plus can't do (other than FaceID, which of course TouchID does basically the same thing), it's just things that it will do slightly better, which is to be expected every year. I don't begrudge you or anyone else who wants to upgrade though.

This year just kind of reminds me of when they went from the 5s to the 6 and 6 Plus. Actual technical or functional improvement were very modest. The driving force for sales was just people wanting a larger display, and for many that was enough. In fact, I was one of those many. That was the one and only time I upgraded my phone after just one year, simply because I wanted the bigger screen.

I’m upgrading from the X to the X Plus. Definitely not needed as the X has been my favorite iPhone, but I wouldn’t mind the larger screen and I’m hoping for ProMotion. It doesn’t cost me any more money so why not.

I hear ya. This year will likely be the hardest for me to justify my annual upgrade. I’ve yet to hear one thing about the camera, I still prefer Touch ID to Face ID, I’m not drawn to losing a home button and OLED isn’t a draw to me. Pretty much echoing what you’d said earlier. I’m really hoping that something happens Wednesday that will surprise me and get me excited but I’m not holding my breath.

I swore up and down I wouldn’t have anything to do with the XS’es. Now I’m thinking I like what I’m hearing about the new modem, made by Intel notwithstanding.

What’s so desirable about ProMotion that you want it for the IPhone? I went to take a look at it when my husband was shopping for a new iPad, but I didn’t see much difference in the store lighting. I’m on older iPads. Just wondering.

I love it on my iPad Pro. I notice the difference easily between mine and my girlfriends 2018 iPad. Super high refresh rate so everything is extremely smooth, scrolling is perfect, animations better, stuff like that. That on a Xs Plus size would be a very nice experience.

Ah, okay thank you. Yes that would be nice. Even on the smaller one that I am considering.

I think I have had all...or maybe I skipped the 5s. Honestly I don’t remember...but...I don’t know yet what I will do. I am inclined to replace my 8 and maybe not my X. I have used up the Apple care plus on my 8 so it seems like I should sell it. I don’t know what my finally choice will be until I see what is released!!

Not all 11 generations but most of them.

The iPhones are getting way too expensive for what you get, software side especially. The so-called Max maybe cool but it will be way too heavy with the glass back needing a case for protection imo. I just don’t see the positives of a beautiful glass phone bumping up the price that needs a case to stay pristine and making it heavy.

I’ve owned one or more of every generation iPhone. Never used a case for any of them. Some had glass backs. Never damaged one other that some fine line scratches. It’s fine.

You would not be in the majority, I’ve yet to see anyone not use a case. Most do.

I’ve never met anyone who uses a case. No one in my family or office does. Must be a generational or regional thing.
I see people of all ages with iPhones in cases. But I’m very interested in your theory, please share.

I can chime in as one who has owned all generations. In fact, the iPhone 4S was the only one that I didn't pre-order and receive within the first 30 days prior to my X. I eventually ended up getting it (I was initially put off by reports of horrible battery life) but it was the following year after I had tinkered with the 5 and decided to trade it.

ANYWHO. My plan as of this second is to stick with my X. I drove three hours to pick up the only X I could find and this was a couple of months after release. It's a stellar phone and having used both plus and regular sized phones, I find it to be the perfect size.

All 11 gens for me as well! And yes I'm really on the fence this year about upgrading. My X 256GB (with AC+ to boot) is a rock and I don't know what the XS will offer that will make me want upgrade. I've always had the Plus models but the biggest reason was for battery life so I don't think I'll go XS MAX as the battery life on my X is fantastic.

Big factor for me would be Face ID2. But I don't see it happening until next year when I'm guessing they shrink the notch.

Every *new* generation that wasnt iterative and boring.

Original was crap without 3G.... 3G
4
5
6
Now X

This year and likely next year are iterative non-innovative sleepy years.

I'm going to upgrade from my 8Plus. I've had everything from the iP4 (because I was a poor college student and couldn't afford the previous models).

I'm still sad we're not getting a 9 or more importantly a 9S, but like Yoko Taro said "Sadly, I'll never have an iPhone 9s because, 9S is an android".

(Sorry, it's a video game reference)

Let’s see what these new phones can do better than my X. I’ll save the upgrade fee if it really is just the X with one new feature.

I’m actually in the situation the OP is describing.

I’ve purchased a new iPhone every year since the original, usually did so by selling my current one to fund most of the purchase for the new one. I’ve gone through:

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
iPhone 5
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6 Plus
iPhone 6s
iPhone 7 Plus
iPhone X

However this year (since I purchased the X really) I planned to keep the phone for 2 years and not upgrade in 2018. Part of the reason is that I absolutely love using the X. Still feels like such an incredible device. Also partly because of how expensive these devices are getting ($1500 incl sales tax in Canada for 64GB).

And the biggest factor, I’m more interested in upgrading my iPad Pro and Watch this fall.

Though, I’m sure seeing the 6.5” model in person is going to be hard to resist.

The need to upgrade frequently is reduced or eliminated by the maturity of the product.

Think back to products launched 3 years before the upcoming one. For example:
-4s back to 3G
-6s back to 5

There were huge improvements or changes to screen, performance, and size. Compare any older 3 year span.

Now, a 6s is still very good. The difference to current is marginal compared to the past.

Upgrading less frequently seems more acceptable because phones are so good already. That’s an overall positive.
