With all this hype going on about the iPhone, I decided maybe I would get one. After a week of reading and thinking this would be the only thing I would have to carry with me that would replace my treo and iPod I decided this might be a good thing. So I find some stock locally in my area and call up the wife and say hey I think I'm going to get one of those iPhones, do you mind? Well she did mind and was really pissed. Granted I was going to just throw it on the old credit card and pay it off in the next few months like I normally do, mainly cause I could get some no interest purchases on some items with my credit card. She went on this speech about how I have to many gadgets I don't need a new phone, I just got the mac book pro, which was six months ago. I tried to explain to her that this would be something that would help me out a little bit more efficiently. But she just got mad. Frankly I just needed to vent and thought this would be a good topic for other folks as well.

It is not that I couldn't afford the iPhone, it isn't a money issue, but she is just not going to work with me on getting it. Not sure what her problem is on this. I don't really buy a lot of stuff, except for the occassional CD and the only time I really purchase anything is when it is something better. I just don't understand her on this one.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks for reading just needed to vent on this topic.

Wait a month.
Buy her something she always wanted or something that reminds her of her childhood.

Then... BAAM... tell her you are GOING to buy an iphone later that day.

warning: this may end in divorce.

Bribe her. When your married and want a toy, you have to spend twice as much for it,... $600 for her $600 for you  :D

could it be that she has a point? nobody needs a $600+ phone, and it's hard to call the iPhone anything other than an extravagance. if ypu still feel like you want one, maybe you can reason with your wife and come up with a solution you can both live with.

If it isn't a money issue then it's something more personal between you and your wife. Put yourself in her head and see if you can understand why she feels you have too many gadgets. Does she think you get more pleasure from your gadgets than you do from your relationship with her? Reassure her that you have your priorities straight, from her perspective (if you do).

Haha, I am going thru the same thing right now. I was going to get an iPhone on iDay but the wife said no way. She thinks nobody needs to spend $600 on a phone, I have too many gadgets, blah, blah blah.

I eventually negotiated a compromise. I will use $200 is credit card rewards to reduce the price. Also I will give up my WoW subscription (I don't have time to play now anyway) which will result in a $4.90 savings in our cashflow.
+$20/month (data plan) - $9.95/month (old data plan) - $14.95/month (WoW)=$-4.90.

I know its strange, but it makes sense in her weird logic.

welcome to married life ;) I had the same issue trying to convince her to get the iPhone. i finally got her to agree when i showed her how me getting it will benefit her as well. i guess I also got lucky that my birthday was right around the corner.

I lucked out. For months I was trying to figure out how to buy an iPhone without hearing the usual noise about buying a gadget that I did not need when two weeks ago she backed her car out of the garage....without the door being fully up! She took out half the door with her SUV!

I did not say a word. And neither did she when I brought home my iPhone a week ago today.

Like I said, I got lucky :)

For me the iphone was a money saver, in a way. Save 25-30 per month on cell phone bill , as my treo needed the unlimited pda plan at 40 (instead of 20) plus I paid for the little text messages I used.

Then I bought two, sold one on craiglist locally. Made 100.

Sell my old treo 650 on ebay for 100-200.

Plus I am eligible for a new phone on 7/10 from at& t to sell, getting a refurb blackberry pearl for 30 sell for 230, make 200.

So its a net gain (at least with my crazy , I want it now math :D ).

Wussy.

No, I just bought my wife one when I got mine, and she's happy as a clam. She says she never appreciated anything tech until she met me. Now she's hooked.

Before I get married, gadget-buying-on-a-whim will be something my future wife will be made very clear of before walking down the isle so that there's no misunderstandings later hehe.

I buy gadgets and she'll need to accept that if she accepts me....man I'm going to be single forever lol...

yeah the wife isn't very technical. she now uses an ipod nano that i got her when her old ipod photo broke. also, when she washed her cell phone, i replaced it with one i bought on ebay. hmm, maybe i should wash my treo, or better yet, she could wash my treo. now that would be funny. i thought about telling her i would sell my ipod a treo and that i should regain about two hundred of the cost, but that still leave the four hundred dollar gadget.

i guess she just doesn't understand that side of things. our relationship is really strong. she just has a different priority on stuff then i do. she doesn't understand that for things like laptops and smartphones are extensions of myself that will make my life more efficient. oh well, you watch my treo will never break and be very robust and i will never get my way, ha!

Actually, I went to pick up the iphone with my girlfriend. She didn't know until 5 minutes before we walked in he mall. She was supportive and joked with the cashier about how I wouldn't hang out with her for a few months now that I have my new toy.

She basically spent the rest of the day watching tv next to me while I played with the phone which was great. I guess she knows that I'm usually so cheap and that this is a rare splurge for me.

Just buy two. Your significant other will love the attention since these phones are still rare and conversation pieces...

My wife wasn't too thrilled, but I had warned the family to not buy me anything for Father's Day. iDay also hit on payday, so that made it possible. She thinks it's pretty cool, but won't play with it. I definitely won't be buying anything else in the near future!
