Because the space grey has a protective coating, its more resistant to knicks and scratches but the downside is you csnt polish it without removing the coating

So it is more durable but it is less fixable vs silver
It’s not the same DLC coating that they use on the space grey stainless steel Apple Watch which is extremely durable. The coating on the phone is PVD which is much easier to scratch..

I'll take the Space Gray, but let me get this straight!
I have the 8 plus since day 1, and I tried and changed several cases: never found 1 scratch on the dark aluminum.
From what I have read, the dark steel gets easily scratched, or at least as easily as the silver one, which can however be polished.

So steel is more easily scratched than aluminum, even just switching cases, and NEVER using it naked?

The stainless steel bands will show micro scratching just going in and out of cases and pockets; nature of the beast.

The SG holds up considerably better, but it is not immune. Yes, you can polish the bands of the Silver, but not on the SG.

My suggestion is to just use the phone and enjoy it.

Yes, I know it’s not the same coating as the Apple Watch and I know it’s not as durable as the coating used on the watch

However this thread is about the iPhone, not the watch, and I am comparing the two iPhone X finishes to each other, to help OP have an idea about the XS finishes he/she asked about. This is the topic of this thread.

And as such, the iPhone X space grey finish is still more scratch and scuff resistant than the default stainless steel. But also as a result, one can easily polish the stainless steel on the silver iPhone X but cannot on the space grey

So, given we are talking about iPhones here, the stainless steel is less resistant to begin with, but one can “fix” it
