Hey,

I've been looking into the iPhone 3Gs for sometime, now I'm off today and tomorrow and its time to buy one.

I've read some pros and cons for both Black and White... but I would like to know that regular users think.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks to engadget for the photos.

Some side by side comparisons...

I like them both, but I love sexy black so my 3G and 3GS have been black. White just seems a little too bright and looks like a bar of soap, but it's still pretty slick.

I've had a black 3G for over a year now (got it at launch) and I couldn't be happier...I have a black Incipio feather case on it combined with a Steinheil anti-glare screen protector so it doesn't attract any fingerprints. Overall, I think the black iphone in sexier than the white and is more 'professional' imo. I always get complements on it :apple::cool:

I've had both (white iPhone 3G, black iPhone 3G S). I'd have to say I prefer the black, but the white was a damn nice looking too. I feel the black one is more discrete and professional, however.

what do you mean pros and cons to the black and white? they're both the same exact phone in a different color... there are no pros and cons, its not like the white has different specs. its all personal preference on a color.

-BLACK - Pros : Black front/back – flows back and front all blends together, looks slimmer (optical illusion), simlock blends in, looks good with MacBook (aluminum)

-BLACK - Cons : Scratches stand out, smudges more easier, a lot people have black (common)

-WHITE- Pro: Doesn’t show smudges easily, bolder “stands out as different”, scratches not too apparent, accessories match, not a lot of people have them.

-WHITE- Cons: BIGGEST: Simcard area stands out (would annoy me - see pic), heard of discolouring

I love the white, the only thing thats putting me off is the simcard holder part seems really noticeable, or maybe i'm just being too picky.

Regarding scratches and how prominent they are on the phone:

I think it depends on what type of scratches, the lighting and the angle at which you view the phone. I've noticed that fine scuff marks appear much worse on the black than on the white.

If you think that's noticeable, wait until you get smudges or cracks. The white sucks for that.

I have had cracks, I recently exchanged my phone for several hairline cracks by the volume key. I've read about people getting a replacement every time they find a hairline crack, but I can't afford to do that. Frankly, from what I understand all these plastic housings will develop hairline cracks sooner or later. I have my phone in a case, but I'm afraid I can't say that I baby it. I've never dropped it, but if a hairline crack is going to develop because I toss my phone on the bed or set it down on the table at a foot per second...what am I gonna do?

I like the white one, but I also have both; over use the white one looks more "luxurious" while the black just feel plain and regular since most phones are black.

I have a black.. got my GF a white.. All things aside.. it boils down to which color you prefer.. Cracking and all happen on both phones.. the white just lets u know its there so you can replace it in time.. If you feel like a dark assasin you get black.. if you feel all softy and fuzzy inside you get white.. don't buy a color for anyother reason other than the fact that YOU like the way it looks..

I have a white one, I got it because I think it looks cleaner and I think white when I see anything apple.

It has a small crack on the bottom corner, but it's tiny and my case hides it.

My brother has a black one, so it makes it easier to grab the right one when they are both on the table.

I have both. Got the black 3G and now I have a white 3Gs. I also picked white because everyone at work had the black one, lol.

I bought one of each and gave my wife the choice of which one she wanted, secretly hoping she'd pick the white one because I think the black model looks more sophisticated. Luckily, she picked white, so my phone is black.

I can't compare the look of scratches because we're so protective of our phones that neither of them has a scratch so far.

If you are planning to get a case, consider the color of the case along with the color of the phone.

I think the decision is slowly driving me insane. I wish i was closer to an apple store or 02 store so i could see them in person, maybe that would help me make my mind up.

never thought about a case

Most of us are pretty set on why we wanted the color we got. I'd day if you're that indecisive, it really doesn't matter which color you get. Flip a coin?

Looking at the pictures in the OP, I can certainly tell why I chose the black.

I'm sure some people are thinking the exact same thing about the white. It really is a matter of preference. Aside from the white showing cracks a little more there's really nothing else anyone can say to answer this question.

Perhaps it will help to know that this probably isn't your last iPhone purchase. In a couple of years you'll want to upgrade to the latest and greatest model, and so you'll get another chance to pick. You could get the other color next time or maybe by then you'll have a more definite opinion.

Fixed. ;)
