Keynote on the ipad means that I have been able to leave my notebook at home almost every day that I used to have to take it to work.

I no longer take my notebook on shorter trips, but on longer research trips, the macbook pro is a requisite.

The iPad, however, does replace a lot of paper for trips - something really tremendous.

Probably the biggest implication of the iPad is that I do not see myself buying a new macbook pro for quite some time, particularly if larger capacity SSDs become reasonably priced in the next couple years.

What is the mouse doing there? Did you manage to get you mouse working with this iPad?

Jailbroken iPad app called BTMouse or something, lets you connect a mouse to the iPad, a cursor comes up and you can use the mouse to click on apps and stuff.

Some interesting replies! I think I will run with my Macbook Pro for a while yet anyway but if things carry on I will look at a Mac mini when it comes to replacing the Macbook pro.

Can't say the same, still need stuff like IM running in the background, Facebook chat, proper tabbed browsing etc.

Apple still has some work cut out for them to match the laptop browsing experience, hope they realize it.

When I first got my iPad I had a Macbook Pro. The only time I turned my MBP on was to sync my music. 2 weeks had passed and I still hadnt turned it on. Needless to say I sold it, and havent missed it since. All I did on the MBP was surf the web, twitter, fb and listen to music. The iPad serves that purpose very well, and i've even started reading because of it.

How do you sync music and data etc without your mbp?

ive been thinking about selling my macbook pro ever since i got my ipad. i used the pro for the same thing...web surfing, fb, email, music... my fiance has a macbook pro too which i could use to sync. i just havent decided yet if i want to part with it....although it would give me some cash for iphone 4! i just remember how excited i was a few months ago about getting the pro and its all faded because of the ipad!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But the answer is no, I did not know what the future would hold.

True, but it does make you wonder how much a hit Apple will take on their MBP's in the future. It's obvious now a lot of people never needed one in the first place, at least over a MB.

They do, and they know that mimicking the old way is not a way to progress.
I've been using personal computers since they existed in the early 80's and as far as they have come, it amazes me how little they have come too.

People who mostly absorb content can do fine without a laptop.

Anyone who's creating a lot of content will be disappointed if they try and make the iPad the sole machine. Laptop is needed for creative tasks and will be for the foreseeable future unless you don't mind doing things MUCH slower.

Selling the MBP

Yup, I thought I was going to grow out of it, but my MBP 2.53 13" has been sitting on my desk since I got the iPad except for one time. I am selling it and using the $$ to buy an iMac. Faster, bigger screen, bluetooth keyboard included that I can use with my iPad as well...

WIN

That will also free up an old mac mini to get up on craigs list and I can use my wife's student status to get an iPod touch and sell that off for a $150 profit after the rebate.

After all is done, I should end up with faster, bigger, and $$ in my pocket :)

I use the same combo.[/QUOT
I do too!

However, a few months ago I also bought the latest Vaio Z11 and I wonder whether I'll keep it.
Indeed, I have been quite busy recently and I haven't used it much, using the iPad instead.
However, now that I have more time, I have used the Vaio a bit more, above all when I use Excel (Numbers is clearly not that good yet and Excel on the iMac sucks...).
So I am a bit torn.
