I think the answer is an emphatic no!

Why struggle, tapping away in email, surfing iSafari, or using some eBay/social networking widget, when you can open your Air in a jiff and get it done in one tenth the time?

Don't buy into the hype -- it's certainly not worth it for the "gaming platform". It's also a huge phone, as they go.

Other things, like the GPS, the cellular data and whatnot, are available on other phones, if you want them.

I'm speaking as someone who has an Air and an iPhone, and I find myself wishing I had a more practical phone.

That's not to say the iPhone is a nice thing to have and use for some people, yadda yadda [/anti-flame caveat]

Good luck!

Edit: after reading some of the previous posts more carefully, watch out for those who have drunk the kool-aid! Apparently not choosing an iPhone means no cell phone at all to some of these trolls!

you're comparing two different categories of tech gadgets. its akin to comparing a hard drive to my lava lamp. kind of stupid.. but the MBA has more function, period.

Hey guys, I have a car, it's usually wherever I am, if I'm at home, it's parked outside, same for work etc.
Do I really need a sofa in my house? I mean, if I want to sit down I can just do that in the car right? It'd be a pain to have to buy both.

You could, but are you sure that your car is capable of using all of its features everywhere?

I had to add that to complete the comparison between stories.

I think I'm just gonna return my iPhone 3G for a refrigerator. I mean the iPhone can tell me where to find food, but it could be hit or miss. Meanwhile, you go to the fridge and it is a guaranteed thing.

Do you carry your MBA to the loo as well?:p

Jokes apart..... I want both my hands free for most part of the day! And carrying a MBA would be hindrance to that!

Perhaps what this person needs is an iPod Touch. It is neither a phone nor a laptop, and makes about as much sense as his question.

I have both MBA and iPhone 3G.

Before I got my iPhone, my MBA used to go with me everywhere I go because I had a perfect match, T-Mobile(free thetering) BlackBerry Pearl. When I'm on the go, I can use my blackberry's browser and email. Whenever I have a place to take out my MBA, I'm online via blackberry. Even while I'm thetering, blackberry would still receive emails and I can still send out emails/or answer incoming calls. I thought I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I looked into thetering on iPhone (using t-mobile ofcourse) but as soon as I got the phone, I didn't feel the need for MBA anymore. iPhone has completely replaced it. I now wait til I get home to do the heavyduty web browsing.

Just my two cents.

It seems almost everybody is missing the point of the question here.

- The guy already has a 3G Motorola phone, which can presumably share its internet connection with the MBA
- He already carries his MBA everywhere

Given these facts, would it make much sense to buy an iPhone?

It's really not that simple to answer, and depends almost entirely on personal circumstances. You can use the iPhone in many places where a laptop (even as small as the MBA) simply isn't practical (public transport, or anywhere where you can't sit down). But if you don't find yourself often in such a situation, web browsing, emailing, etc on a MBA is definitely much better than on the iPhone, if you have a place to sit down.

Besides iphone is always online, is there any other reason to get an iphone if you have MBA with you?

That's a pretty situation specific question, I'm not quite sure what kind of answer you're looking for.

I suppose the iphone would make sense because it has a longer battery life, I suppose you could use it when the air's battery gives.

This is... really stupid. If you have no use for an iPhone, don't bloody well get it.

If you want a phone that does everything the iPhone does, get it.

Why did you even post this?

Apples meet oranges.
Clearly you can't be serious when you say you have no need for a cell phone because you have a computer. Sure, you don't need a cell phone and you may not care if you have one, but saying you have one therefore you don't need the other is quite silly imho.

Pointless withought NetShare.

An iphone without NetShare is like having dead weight to haul around if you have an Air,that's why they called it a Macbook Air!

the iphone is nice because you can whip it out of your pocket anywhere such as the waiting room of a doctors office. You wouldnt take your air into such a place...

Actually I have taken my MBA to the doctor's office several times. And my doctor has wifi, so it works great! Personally I have no need for an iPhone, but clearly many people do. It's a personal decision.

That's interesting. I have a 3.06Ghz iMac and iPhone 3G, but I kind of want something in between. Apple, please update the MacBook Air.
