Well I guess it's somewhat more useful in America, but out here it can't do any of that. It's been nearly 8 months and Siri hasnt shown any signs of improvement, we just get told "It's a Beta, be patient!" So all Siri can do for me is set alarms and reminders. Me personally I don't have any speech impediments or a regional accent, yet Siri normally has trouble understanding me. She's nailed setting alarms because thats all I use her for now.

Everytime people at work hear I have a 4S, they ask me to demonstrate Siri, and it nearly always fails miserably.

"Call Dan"

Siri: Calling Tom Field.

"No, Call Dan"

Siri: I'm sorry, I don't understand Core Dan

After seeing the commercial with Siri, I tried to get Siri to remind me to put the gazpacho on ice. It literally took me 30+ attempts, with Siri flodding my calender with reminders to "Put the Dispatcher on Ice".

Thats a shame :( I didn't realize it was different for other countries :(

While I don't think Apple Insider's the best place for information, I can't disagree. Siri is an absolute failure at understanding me...

Stop speaking like Yoda, perhaps thejadedmonkey should.

Above is humorous reference to thejadedmonkey's avatar, for those not in the know...

People think Steve Jobs wasn't involved with Siri??

I don't think they think that. What is an indisputable fact is that Siri works far worse than intended (or at least advertised) for a whole boatload of people. Would Steve have been ok with that? We will likely never know.

Siri many time works great and other times not so much.

Apple just needs to make it so you know for certain, it'll work. Now its like 50-50.

They need there "it just works" line.

I find that Siri stinks. It is useless in my opinion.

For a beta, it works fine for me. For me, I use it to set the alarm mainly. I hope the iOS 6 would add more features and third party api for Siri. I like Siri and it is still with me.

Siri is important - it marks the what I hope is the mainstreaming of voice recognition rather than typing. Add that to gaze recognition and it could be quite powerful combination(look at a button and say 'click that'). The main problem is that Siri relies on the network, but I expect that at some point the voice recognition will be put on a chip internal to the phone. In the mean time, I wish Apple would pull their finger out and roll out decent Siri services in the UK.

I'm afraid my experiences echo this, and again no location support here either; means that Siri remains a superficial cosmetic gimmick. Not sure how long a 'BETA' should be a beta, but it certainly feels like we could be waiting till the New iPhone & iOS6 before we see any tangible Siri improvements, leaving me with the impression Siri was left in this gimped form for International phones - just to give it a marketing difference over the iPhone 4.

Who says Tim Cook is OK with it? This idea that Steve was the only one at Apple who had standards or high expectations is ridiculous.

far away from an Apple store
Siri is embarrassing, at least outside the US. I'm yet to meet a person speaking with a non-American accent who gets understood by Siri without any issues. I had to repeat my commands at least twice every time before it got it right. I have friends from a variety of different backgrounds and they also struggle with communicating with the thing. It simply does not work as smoothly as shown in the ads.

I certainly don't say that. That said, it made it through to consumers AND it is still just about the only feature of the 4S that Apple advertises. I think people are just feel let down, and need somewhere to point fingers (or in this case NOT point them ;) ).

I set the alarm daily, but the issue is that 3 or 4 nights a week I get one of the ever so common errors that Siri can't connect (Wifi or 3G both have full signal, and wifi is connected to 4000/800 ADSL2 connection).

As for making a note, even if I don't use names or technical words which Siri often fails on, 2/3 of the time I have to edit it and it takes longer to do than simply typing it myself. Music, well unless I "Play music" then most band or artists names fail (ok maybe Kiss and the Dan Butler Trio may work IF Siri can connect)

Siri is just one reason I bought the 4S for, but I'd give it a 4 out of 10, as excluding the connection errors, it still is missing local information outsides the USA, and considering the volume of users outside the USA, that is an important thing for us!

Yes but would he have signed off on its release? I for one don't think so. Maybe one or two more generations down the line. I think he would have demanded better performance.

He did sign off on the release. Siri was released the day after he died. I'd venture to guess he knew it was going to be released with the 4S.
