A big backwards step seems to be that it always relies on there being a data connection.

I use voice recognition all the time on my 3gs when I'm on the subway to change music tracks (it works OK if I hold the mic close to my mouth, and the train noise is too loud to disturb anyone else).

I'd be really annoyed to loose that feature. Apple should regress to the previous technology if there's no data connection, rather than just giving up.

It's not just connecting to the network to get information, some of the actual AI processing is going on in the cloud. So basically Siri doesn't really know what you're asking unless there is a network connection.

Bad excuse. Simple commands like this were parsed fine in the last two models without relying on a server farm in the cloud.

If you actually think about what Siri is doing you will realize that is not really feasible. You are asking the phone to essentially parse every sentence for short android like commands before sending it off to be properly processed. That defeats the entire point.

Voice control was not removed in ios 5 continue to use that. But asking the phone to magically step in the middle of this advanced ai processing and do it on the phone, again misses the point

Seems like a lot of user error up in here. I sent 3 text messages, had Siri read a text message and and then replied to it all while driving and never taking my eyes off the road.

Mine only works as long as its on my super-fast home wi-fi network......

....if I try to use it when I am out and about - it simply says its unable to connect to the network...even when I have a full 3G signal????

You can always turn off Siri when you don't have data access. The phone will default back to the old voice control.

But I have to say this "first world problems".
;)

PS. I switched carriers when I stubbled upon a store from another carrier that had iPhone 4S models in stock after work. I had to leave the downtown core and take a train ride but at least I did not have to stand in line. :D

I've not really had any problems, save for a couple of times not getting to a network, but that's likely because everyone who got new iPhones were showing their friends and family that Siri will give you tips on where to dump a dead body, at around the same time.

Not a game changer? I don't agree. When I am in my car, I can put my phone to my ear and say "find my son," and my cell phone can show me where my 12 year old is (not a bad parent - I know where he is SUPPOSED to be all the time) within half a minute or less - that's technology that's makes a difference. That's Star Trek stuff, right there!

This elevates text messaging in the car to the amount of distraction a normal phone call would have, instead of having a more dangerous situation where you are taking one or more hands off the wheel, and your eyes off the road for an extended period of time. Still a bad idea, but if it saves one life?

Perfect? No. A new gimmicky piece of software THAT I WILL ACTUALLY USE? Yep. There are so many "features" that tech companies put into their gadgets that I seldom, if ever use just so they can be able to mark the checklist as having some feature they think their competitors might have. This is not one of them. I NEVER used voice control pre-iOS 5. I WILL use Siri, and I will use it A LOT. It will only get better too, which is great.

I am having the network connection issues.

But also, who has a male voice for Siri? I was expecting a female voice, and I cannot seem to change it

The voice changes from country to country. As you are in the UK, you got a male voice, I think.

I actually liked the male voice, more, sounded more futuristic.

Grass is always greener, huh?

I think it takes a different way at looking at Siri, which, as a disclaimer I do not have the 4S yet, but just looking at all the different pros and cons I think the first thing to do is look at Siri as a try AI as opposed to voice recognition.

Voice recognition on most phones only replies to a request with the same response. So it's like programming a computer that when you say Hi, Hello, or What's up to reply How are you? So no matter which you say it's always going to come back with one response.

Siri, from what I've seen and using the previous example I imagine is going to respond differently to at least 2 of the three - that's not just voice recognition - that's, in my opinion, just freaking cool!! But you get an idea of exactly what Siri is - it's actually something that needs to learn. Expecting Siri right out of the gate to know and do everything 100% of the time is like expecting a baby to walk, talk and do somersaults as soon as he/she is born. Like Siri in this instance you have to teach it and at times it's going to fault for one reason or another.

But to just think we have this type of technology in our hands now is crazy. I've been looking through all the different Siri experiences and if you can show me a voice recognition on any other phone or computer that can tell a story, that can know when a question or phrase that has been repeated many times (ie. open the pod bay doors) and can not only set an appt but be able to change that appt right after you made it then, ok, we can be disappointed.

And not saying anything at all that we can't be disappointed or point out the faults...I just think that I've seen a lot of comments too that point it's "voice recognition" like other programs and I think it's so much more than that and maybe needs to be though of differently.

Just my 2 cents though. I'm jealous of everyone that gets to have fun with it now.

But is it really AI as you describe. Because it's just as easy to program a variation/randomizer for Siri to respond a few different ways - but give similar results when the same question is asked.

Unless someone is one of the back end programmers - I think it's really all conjecture on what is going on behind the scenes with this beta as to whether it's programmed responses, programmed/randomized responses, AI, etc

Siri (from the app) hasn't changed much and still responds/provides information as it always did. The bigg(er) different in iOS5 right now is that it is integrated and can use Apple's Apps/stored info to bring up results and launch the appropriate app...

Just wanted to mention, if you turn Siri off you can still use the old voice recognition. Should Siri work better? Yes, and hopefully many of the issues will resolve over time. But for now if there are things you liked about the old voice recognition you still have access to them.

BTW when Im not having server issues, I think Siri works fantastic

Wow that is going to suck if you're on a plane with Airplane mode turned on...

This might not be obvious, but.... you can always Disable SIRI if you are without data for a while.

Of course, it would be nice if iOS5 automatically went to old-school voice control when in airplane mode.

I'd like to bring these up since everyone is too busy raving how awesome Siri is. There are a few fairly big problems:

- after using Siri, the ringer volume is set to MAX, even though if you adjust the ringer volume, you may only be at level 3 or 4. It takes a few screen locks and adjustments before it kicks in properly at the right level.

I'm glad I am not the only one this is happening to, I'm sure it will be fixed in next update but it is very annoying. Is it the result of talking so loud into the microphone?

I've noticed this too. I wondered what was going on and after reading this I think I understand now. Hopefully they'll get it ironed out by the next release of iOS 5. (this message dictated by Siri.)
