I tried the AC3 Parsthruu, but it didn't even work on the ATV (it's fully updated), got any idear? I could also just compress on my Mac even though the 1.6 C2D which is much more slower than the 2.66 C2D in my XP, because the mac has a audioformat the windows handbrake dosen't have...

An other thing is the filers..
I tried it but couldn't really see any difference on my UP(2009), the only thing i noticed is that the denoice (medium) made som strange constrast noices in black clolors.
So i think ill stick with the standart preset (ATV)

Are you using the optical audio out or HDMI for audio?

So there seems to be controversy on this thread. Apple TV or universal?

Also, I don't rip DVDs much anymore, I have most of them at native resolution ripped already. Can I use Handbrake for files that I already have, not only DVDs? Is there any downside to this?

Universal. The ATV setting makes nicer, but bigger files, and the extra size/quality is a bit of a diminishing return, imo. The universal files will also playback on more devices, which is nice if you own more than one. The newest generation of iPhone and iPod touch will play the ATV files (mostly, anyways, so I hear, though I can't vouch for that personally) but I don't think the nano or classic will.

Frankly, the universal files are small (less than a gig an hour usually) and scale up very nicely even to 100" projector screens. I don't see the need for the ATV setting at all (at this point - the universal setting didn't used to be this good, but the x264 guys have done a remarkable job with the constant quality encoder).

You can use handbrake to re-encode files you already have. If you are down-sizing them to iPod resolution or something you will get very good results. If you are just changing formats (say from DiVX to h.264) you'll have some degradation - better to go back to the source DVD for that.

^Agreed.

Apple TV preset would probably be okay for scaling down 1080p or 720p content, but if you're converting from DVD, it's overkill to me. I use Universal... the Apple TV preset, to me, is akin to putting lossless files on your iPod instead of 320kpbs mp3 or AAC.... much larger file, not much return in quality.
