Well if your going hack again....tis the season to buy parts.

Still have 2012 mini my brother uses but I am done with the over priced waiting for God knows how long for Apple to put something out if your lucky routine.

Well if your going hack again....tis the season to buy parts.

I'm tempted some times but I have all I need I think. Got a main machine "iMac 14,2" a z87 chipset Haswell i5 running at a rock solid 4.2ghz 32gb ram, 2x480gb raid0 SSD boot. Backup for that machine "iMac 14,2" identical MB i5 stock 16gb 2x120gb raid0 SSD boot 4x4tb zfs raidz1 for my main storage. Third backup second file backup z87 only pentium 3258@4ghz 12gb ram 3x1.5tb & 5x2tb raidz1 for storage runs Debian most times a "mini6,2" when in OSX. Fourth machine third file backup 3x3tb 4x2tb raidz1 for storage p55 board can run a hack but only does Debian. Plus others, couple of laptops got the first two main and spare from selling off my MP5,1 plus put 700-800 in my pocket all the hard drives in them machines other than the fours were bought dirt cheap few years back when you could get them 2-3tb at 60-70 the fours at just over 100 when on sale. In short if possible at this point I got the computer hardware up the proverbial butt and do not really need more I'm knee deep in it. Though if I could find good deal on 4790k just might be tempted...

I think of them as the Mercedes of computers: "The best - or nothing".

An E-Class Mercedes costs a certain amount of money. You can buy (much) cheaper cars, with almost the same feature-set - but it's not the same, never will be.
As said, Apple is currently wired to exploit monopolies they created themselves. Those are very difficult to create - and they become more difficult (and expensive) to create with each technological and innovational cycle.
While Apple (execs and board) is probably as much aware of this (and worried) as you or me, it's a completely different thing to "fix" this (if it is at all).
The shuttering of the Airport devices this week shows that they are trying to get rid of any "distractions" that have become commodities in the market.
