Hi all,

I'm finding the new lock screen a bit "jarring"; I've been swiping to unlock for eight years so I keep ending up on the widget screen.

I've found a few articles saying that you can restore the old behaviour via Accessibility settings/Home Button/Rest Finger to Open. However, both positions seem to do the exact same thing: Take me to a blank "lock" screen and require a second press of the Home button to unlock the phone.

Is there a way to restore the old behaviour in the GM?

After enabling in accessibility, have you reset the device?

Works as advertised here.

Sigh. I guess it's changed since a previous beta (I never tried any of them). I really wish that companies wouldn't make this sort of "muscle-memory-breaking" change without having an option to change it back :(
Yes, the outrage from having to turn the handle for starting the engine was a big problem when they changed to key ignition. Many keys were destroyed in the process.

Both slider positions seem to do the same thing, even after a reset. Neither present a "slide to unlock" screen, and sliding opens the widget screen.

I think you've misread those articles. They're not saying it restores slide to unlock, but the functionality of just resting finger to unlock and take to home screen, rather than resting, then pressing to go to home screen. That's the functionality they mean - one home screen button press, not 2.

Slide to unlock is gone, never to return. Wasn't that because of a patent/lawsuit resolution?

When the article is titled "How to Enable “Slide to Unlock” in iOS 10 on iPhone and iPad" then that doesn't leave much open to interpretation. It seems that the article is either not true (which seems to be the case) or that the functionality has been removed since beta 2.

This is a non issue on phones with Touch ID, but it's annoying on devices without TouchID. I installed iOS10 on my iPhone 5, and I agree with the OP that it is jarring having to double click to unlock.
Of course, since pretty much all Apple iDevices (excluding the iPod Touch) have Touch ID now, it would be less of an issue once older devices are deprecated/people upgrade to newer ones.

Well, even on devices with TouchID support there's the case of using them without TouchID where things would still be different.

True, but I think it would be in the minority as most will tend to setup touch ID.

Well, it would still be a change nonetheless. I'm also not so sure how small of a minority it really is--it can still be many people even if they aren't the majority.

Has nothing to do with slide to unlock.
There is nothing jarring about it.
Get over it.

Maybe they could have changes the unlock procedure AFTER they abandoned the last device without Touch ID (iPhone 5), which is next year. Doing it now just makes everything confusing and worse for i5 users. Or better yet, just leave i5 and non-touch id devices with the old method.

There's the iPad 4 and iPad mini 2 to consider as well.

What I can say is that when I went from iOS 10 - 9 is that the new unlock method was stuck in my muscle memory for a bit. I kept trying to double click instead of slide. Hopefully you'll be able to get used to it as well.

In which case, they've misunderstood the comment about restoring previous behaviour, as slide to unlock has never been possible in iOS 10 at any beta stage.

This 2x press is made for older devices to finally break the button. I don't like it

You're definitely entitled not to like it but the "they only did it to break old devices" is pure tinfoil hattery. I'm sorry.

I guess programmed obsolescence is pure tinfoil hattery for you too. Search Google for Apple home button broken

The fact that home buttons may fail (like any other mechanical device ever created) absolutely, in no way whatsoever, supports the whacko "Apple are trying to break your button" theory you espouse

Search Google for "classes in basic logic" or perhaps more up your street, "Chemtrails are the FBI trying to make me crazy"

I have an iPad mini 2 that I keep in a smart case. One of the great things about the smart case is the ability to reach the unlock screen by simply opening the cover; it saved wear and tear on the home and sleep/wake buttons. Now I have to press the home button as well? BS.

I thought things still worked the same way as before with a smart case (at least as of one of the more recent betas).

I had this same issue with a 6s+. When I was troubleshooting, when I went into Settings -> Touch ID, I noticed that all my fingerprints were missing. This was quite strange, since the phone was still unlocking with my fingerprint. So obviously, something got corrupted during the iOS 10 (in my case GM) upgrade.

To resolve, all I had to do was re-input my fingerprints, and then the expected former behavior of immediately unlocking the phone was restored.

Perhaps that will work for you, too!

I definitely saw people report that it did too so I guess either that was reverted or it's a settings issue.
