I agree,

Those who are saying that the slingbox will not work well on 3G have either never used slingmobile or just like to hear themselves talk. I have been using slingbox and slingmobile for years now (i bought it when it first came out in its "CLASSIC" form) and that model was excellent over "then" poor 3G and even on Edge when i had a decent connection. Since then, I have of course upgraded to the new HD models where the quaility and compression is even better and have been slinging on my WM device on At&t 3G network. Never really had any issues using it at all.

There are multiple apps out on the app store that shift places media and streams it such as ORB (which is also a major player) and they run on 3G. This will be no different and will work well with 3G

Amen to this. I have gone through the same experience. I still have my classic Sling box, hell, I remember when I thought Sling was going to tank because the use of it didn't not really make much sense till 3g came out. Yeah, I know, you can use it on laptops but really, I don't watch that much TV! Hehehe....

Either way, I'm 50/50 on the whole wifi only versus 3g/Wifi capability.

I hope I'm completely wrong with it only being wifi. Otherwise, this will go on the same list as Pocket Informant. High expectations, didn't do what I expected it to do.

Yeah, I'm just trying to understand too :p.

I guess ultimately, I was hoping for firm information. Something like (this is just made up example)"The slingbox can only compress the video to X amount, which is more than the iphone can handle unless it uses wifi". Or maybe someone giving a new link to new apple criteria that specifically says "No streaming Slingbox devices".

I have nothing firm. Just assuming what will happen from what I gather about Apple and at&t.

The word on the street is that Slingplayer for iPhone is at Apple now for undergoing app store review

It's not whether the Sling app CAN run at 3G - it's whether Apple/ATT will allow it to do so. Of course the app can run at 3G. But look at the recent history - CBS' mobile madness was wireless video only. Hopefully Dish's muscle is enough, though don't hold your breath.

I've said it in numerous threads, it's not about streaming the video over cellular, it's about how much bandwidth it uses. If their compression is enough to suite the needs, it'll pass. Orb works, YouTube works, Sling should be no different. CBS cheaped out and wanted to offer just a single video stream which would require too much bandwidth to be used over cellular. You can Sling with a 56K modem if you wanted to. The quality won't be great, but it can work. I expect you'll see the same thing. The other part of that issue is that (currently) the developers have no way of knowing if it's connected to EDGE or 3G. They just know if it's cellular, WiFi, or none. So when it detects cellular, it has to assume EDGE, otherwise you could have a lot of customers it won't work for. That's why many of the radio apps defaulted to 64k when it detected cellular and 3G users were crying that the audio quality sucks and 3G is capable of 128k. But if they bump it to 128k it won't work for EDGE users.

My prediction is that it WILL work over cellular, but everyone will bitch and moan because it'll look YouTube over cellular quality or worse.

I wonder if at+t is behind the crippling of iphone apps? If this madness continues, I may have to look at a different phone. *sigh*

Don't hold your breath. I think it will be rejected at least once. If they won't let an app that will only last three weeks use 3G (see CBS March Madness app) then do you think they will let Sling be anything but Wifi only?

Apple better straighten itself out and let these apps come out as they are intended. Sorry if that last part sounded like a broken record.

Is the google OS (phone) as open as BB and WM? I don't want to pay a premium for a hi-tech phone that is crippled...

You can't use the BB Sling app as an example, nobody is controling the gate. Anyone can create an app for BB or WM and release it for use. Nobody is there saying, we don't like how this works on the network you can't use it on a particular BB or WM phone.

They claim to be very open, but that's turning out to be not true. Per "carrier request" they started pulling tethering apps off the Android Marketplace. Similar to how Apple had to pull NetShare.

If AT&T approved YouTube why wouldn't they approve Sling? That is of course assuming AT&T really even has an influential say if Apple decides they want to approve it. What's AT&T going to do? Tell Apple they are unhappY? That would only naturally cause SJ to make a frustrated phone call reminding them that providers don't know jack about software and hardware again.

What was that purported quote from the SJ / cell provider meeting pre iPhone release again? SJ told them something to the effect of "It's a shame consumers have to traverse through the orifices that are the providers in order to get to use the products they want". imo you really have to have em strapped on tight to say that to the faces of the CEO's who's industry you're not even in yet.
