SlingPlayer 3G Update available now...

I see a SlingPlayer update available in my App Store but it still won't play over 3g...it says it is v1.2...is this supposed to be the one that allows 3G play?

Edit: it DOES say 3G but it still gives me the "WiFi Only" error...I wonder if I have to delete the old player and re-download the new player?
Trying that now...
 
enjoy. it works well. I wonder how much data it is using. I had expected it to look much worse.
 
I'm too lazy to actually test how much data it is pulling, but if you get some numbers please do post.

Agree. I thought/think the exact same thing.

Has anyone done any data usage testing to see what the download rates are? My rough testing last week using the Sling WinPC client over my air card yielded about 225 megs an hour.

I'm doing a test right now- and will report back after while.

For a bit of irony, I'm tuned to CNBC- which is likely what I'd tune into sporadically during the work week, and they're running 'Planet of the Apps' right now.

I plan to let it run for about 30 mins and check my phone usage stats (which I've read are not perfectly accurate but it's hopefully good enough).
 
Usage Test over 3G

Okay- I just completed a 30 minute test. I consumed 56.4 megs and battery usage went from 91% to 74%. I hope this hold true- as that would mean only about 110 megs an hour- which seems very good.

  • SD Content via cable (will test HD via Dish later)

Awesome, thanks for the stats! I'm very pleased with the results and very surprised the app wasn't crippled some other way, like not allowing to connect with my "classic" boxes. Which works fine, FYI.
 
follow-up

well- I just spent another 30 mins watching the Olympics in HD via Dish. Interestingly, I only used 30 megs this time. I do think my 3G connection was slower (although still full bars) because during the first 10 mins or so I was getting some stuttering and re-buffering. After that though, things were fine.

Battery usage went from 57% to 36% during this test- so a bit more than last time. I did turn the brightness up to full this time- so that may account for the addl battery drain this time.
 
Sling Mobile question

Can anyone with the app answer a question for me? Does the sling mobile app let you output the A/V from the iphone to a TV via the composite cables?

Considering setting this up to use, but would like to know before hand.

I've got the component cable set and it does not work- at least not by default. I suppose there could be a setting somewhere in the app or elsewhere that enables it - but unlike YouTube, it does not automatically send the video stream to the TV.
 
I was watching the Olympics today on the beach in Cardiff (California/San Diego Coast)...it was blue skies and 75 degrees on an absolutely GORGEOUS day...The Waves were HUGE as well...Surfers having a blast out there...
I LOVE THIS APP!!!! :D

Damn! Sounds nice. I just got back in (literally) from shoveling my driveway for the third time as we got about a foot of snow today. Over the last 8 days nearly 30 inches has fallen- which is extremely unusual (I'm just north of Cincinnati). Good thing I like snow.

Good to know! I had been using a cydia (via jailbreak) app that allowed me to stream Sling over 3g for a year+ and it was running about 220 to 250mb per hour. I had to watch my usage as to no go over 5gig/mo and raise any flags. Now I'll not be worried as AT&T approved it. Wohoo! I use it mostly in March to keep up with all the NCAA tourney games so this lands just in time. Very cool!

You have been slinging over a year when the app was released May 12 of 09?

To the best of my knowledge, it won't work, the reason being that the only thing that goes out on the TV cable is what's playing in the iPod app. Slingplayer isn't that app so it won't work.

I thought i had read somewhere that this functionality was available to the developers, they just have to include the code to do so. Maybe i miss-read.
I have tried some of the games, audio plays out, but no video.

Oh well, guess i will keep looking. thanks for answering.
 
I'm trying to get an iphone 3g for my mom to use with t-mobile. But most probably we'll be on the cheaper t-zones plan which is $6.99 to $9.99 a month. I'm guessing without the 3G, this app really wouldn't be usable for her? Anyone with any experience?
 
Interesting timing. For some reason, 3G was down in my area for a little while earlier today when I was trying out the app at work.

I was surprised to find that it did actually work on Edge. To make it better, I went into the app options and changed 'quality' to SQ vs HQ. Doing so definitely impacted the video quality but it was still very usable. It kind of reminded me of watching video during the 56kb dial-up modem days. The first minute of two were choppy as it would freeze for a few seconds and then pick up. I assume the app was trying to buffer or something because after this, it no longer froze.

I did a speed test and found that my Edge connection was only in the 75-80Kbs range- so pretty slow. Given that I expected it not to work at all, I was fairly happy with the result.
