You have been slinging over a year when the app was released May 12 of 09?

To be more specific, yes more than a year using my iPhone's 3g data stream tethered to my laptop prior to the iPhone app and using another app on Cydia to make the iPhone think it's using wifi when actually on 3g to sling it to the iPhone. Sorry I wasn't more specific. :) Either way was still pulling the data in via my 3g connection. Good to know it's less now in the actual app.

Interesting timing. For some reason, 3G was down in my area for a little while earlier today when I was trying out the app at work.

I was surprised to find that it did actually work on Edge. To make it better, I went into the app options and changed 'quality' to SQ vs HQ. Doing so definitely impacted the video quality but it was still very usable. It kind of reminded me of watching video during the 56kb dial-up modem days. The first minute of two were choppy as it would freeze for a few seconds and then pick up. I assume the app was trying to buffer or something because after this, it no longer froze.

I did a speed test and found that my Edge connection was only in the 75-80Kbs range- so pretty slow. Given that I expected it not to work at all, I was fairly happy with the result.

That is good infor...thanks...my 3G goes in and out here in Southern California especially when I am in LA. It's good to know that I can use Edge in a pinch...

well- I just spent another 30 mins watching the Olympics in HD via Dish. Interestingly, I only used 30 megs this time. I do think my 3G connection was slower (although still full bars) because during the first 10 mins or so I was getting some stuttering and re-buffering. After that though, things were fine.

Battery usage went from 57% to 36% during this test- so a bit more than last time. I did turn the brightness up to full this time- so that may account for the addl battery drain this time.

Do you have a standalone Sling Player with your Dish receiver/DVR, or are you able to use it with just the Dish unit?

I know that Dish owns Sling and that they integrated some of the technology into their DVR's, but I wasn't sure if this app will work without a Sling Player.

I've got a standalone Sling box (HD-Pro)- with a non-dvr box (vip211 i believe) connected to it. The HD-Pro has a built in tuner so I'm also running my basic cable line to is as well. Overall, I've found that SD content, via the cable line, looks better on the iPhone (WiFi or 3G) than the HD content from my dish box. Which makes sense.

Yeah, it actually works a lot better than I had expected. I can even read the closed captions which is a must for me so I'm really happy about that since I shuttle my time back and forth between two cities in AZ and one is EDGE only.

I spent more time today using the Sling App over 3G and I am increasingly impressed by the PQ and lack of buffering..I went for my 4 mile walk today but I didn't want to miss the Olympic Hockey games that were on while I was working out...I watched the USA vs. Switzerland game and the PQ and audio were outstanding...as the poster above stated I could read the scroll at the bottom of the screen...I have to say that thus far this app has surpassed my wildest expectations...the $30.00 I paid for the app was well worth it...My hat is off to the SlingMedia people and those at Apple and AT&T for finally getting this thing right...Cheers to you all! :)

FYI, I am using the app with a Sling AV hooked to my SA HD-DVR via Cox Cable...my only complaint is the same many have stated, that the picture size take up the entire screen...that would make the app just about perfect (although it may be that my outdated SlingBox AV unit is the cause for the smaller widescreen picture)...

Data test

I just did a test:
  • iPhone 3G (3.1.3)
  • Slingbox (original)
  • Rogers 3G network (5 bars)
  • 30 Minutes Streaming
  • Data Sent - 1.3 MB
  • Data Received - 58.2 MB
  • Battery Level - Dropped from 100% to 75%

So is that the original SlingBox? I want to make sure I've got the right box before I slap down money for the app...

IIRC, the AV was part of the 2nd iteration of SlingBox...but the poster right above above did say he is succesfully using an "original" Slingbox with the app...
I do get a "warning" that Sling Media does not "officially" support the use of any other Slingbox but the latest versions...but my AV has been working flawlessly...
