So today in the morning I took off my smart cover and noticed that there's a pretty gruesome scratch on my new iPad where the smart cover meets the iPad.
So it looks like there is a piece of metal coming through the rubber strip on the magnetized part of the cover.

I called apple and the representitive said he had never heard of this happening. I looked online and found a few similar stories with this happening to some iPad 2 owners. I made an appointment at th genius bar tomorrow. I am hoping they replace the iPad and smart cover.

Here are some photos.

Clearly it's a defective smart cover which is rare imo..unless u damaged it by accident and maybe didn't notice it.

I am pretty sure I did not damage it. I just leave it on the iPad. The only time it comes off is when it happens to fall off on its own which doesn't happen to often.

This happened to me with my iPad 2. Brought it into the genius bar and they were willing to swap it out. They said it was probably from debris being trapped under there.

I ended up putting a price of clear tape down the side to prevent it from happening again.

Happened to my iPad 2 too, though I didn't attempt to get it replaced. On my new iPad, I stuck clear tape from the beginning, but now I notice another black spot -- fortunately this time on the tape. Good to hear genius bar has replaced it for you, I might do that with this smart cover.

BTW, I do know that there is a corresponding black spot on the smart cover magnet, which also doesn't come off. Did you notice if your smart cover magnet had such spots?

You might want to crop out your short and curly hairs next time. :p

Mine doesn't do that, maybe because I take it off often when I use it for reading. I've had my Smart Cover since the iPad 2 and now using it on my new iPad.

Did you buy the smart cover from Apple? I thought the inside felt cover was light grey on the blue cover? Also the lettering doesn't look right on the "Assembled in China". Looks more jagged and not in black compared to several of my smart covers.

I got the smart cover when I got the iPad. Both from the apple store during launch day. I also noticed that the cover was not gray on the inside (compared to my mom's cover). I assumed that they changed the material. This is a lot softer. I just thought it was a design change to keep the cover from leaving lines across the glass.

I didn't even notice the hair :D !

Smart Cover has scratched the side of my new iPad

Wow. I've never put it on in a violent manner, nor have I taken it off improperly, yet there are scratches down the left side of the iPad where the metal contacts the iPad itself.

Wtf?

Every time I read one of these scratched iPad threads, it makes me check my iPad to see if it's happened to mine. So far, so good - no scratches with my Incipio Feather and the Smart Cover.

You can't wipe a scratch off..........

If it is a scratch from the Smart Cover and not a smudge as suggested maybe you have a sharp edge or badly moulded hinge. Take it in to Apple to be inspected. Also is it an Apple branded Smart Cover and can you take a photo of the scratch to show us? Pics always add to one's credibility plus we are extremely curious creatures at times.

Yes, probably a design change, my covers are all first generation.

Doubt the design change
I bought my first black leather smart cover ove a year ago with my iPad 2 and it's flawless. Bought my second smart cover navy blue leather with my ipad3 and they are built exactly the same.

Apple has not changed the design of the smart cover OP just got a bad one
