Noticed the same thing had happened to mine on Friday got it replaced on saturday although they wasn't to please to do it. They kept saying its normal when 2 pieces of metal touch each other. I stood my ground and got it replaced for a new one with a perfect screen so happy in the end

Darn, my iPad has it, too. The picture is after I looked and cleaned it up a bit. The plastic strip isn't totally smooth and has some pits in it. It looked almost moldy or mildewy but was probably oxidized aluminum. Almost all of it wiped off the iPad except for a spot that feels scratched into the metal. I just put a strip of clear tape along that side of the iPad to prevent further scratching.

My cover comes off a few times a week both intentionally and accidentally. I've never thought about wiping or dusting off the parts of the iPad and cover that touch, so I probably trapped dirt and other grit in between them. I don't recall ever wiping anything other than the screen as long as I've had the iPad.

That was the one thing that made me nervous about smart covers--I just put a piece of scotch tape down the side so there's no metal on metal. Problem solved. Though, there are little rubber bumpers on the smart cover that should keep this from happening--they just don't.

If the smart cover can scratch metal don't you think it could scratch through the tape pretty easily?

It might I guess. Scotch tape isn't very thick. But I used the same method on my iPad 2 for a year and took the tape off when I sold it--no marks whatsoever.

If it does scratch through, in the end I did just about all I'm willing to do.

Doubt the design change
I bought my first black leather smart cover ove a year ago with my iPad 2 and it's flawless. Bought my second smart cover navy blue leather with my ipad3 and they are built exactly the same.

Apple has not changed the design of the smart cover OP just got a bad one

Apple did in fact make minor changes to the Smart Covers.

The inside material is softer and an off color of the outside. The letters match the color of the inside material.

They're so thorough that even the picture on the back of these covers reflects these minute changes.

That I know, but I was referring to the actually design, the hinge and magnet that has not changed

Wow. lol. I don't have a smart cover, but I have a case...I need to start taking my iPad out every few days to check because I would go months without taking it out the case.

I have always wanted to use my smart cover but never dared use it after reading all the horror stories of it causing scratches and marks to the iPad. I'm definitely not using it now, unless I go down the clear tape route.... not sure about that though.

I just went through this last month, my black leather smart cover (bought at an Apple store) scratched the side of my iPad 2 really bad. Made an appointment with a genius and they replaced it without any hassle.

The rear cover I bought in Japan last month came with a clear 3M skin strip, which isolates the cover from the device. This is a simple solution.

So far so good with mine.

If we could be honest; how many people just slap these bad boys on and off like there's no tomorrow!?

Not trying to condemn but, I'm very careful when putting it on and taking it off.

I've had about a week and no complaints of scratches yet.

I just make sure I handle my iPad in a real common sense type way when the smart cover is attached.

Yes, the issue does exist! Happened to my iPad 2. Since I'm from Brazil, and bought it here, and that there isn't a single one Apple Retail Store in my country, couldn't replace it in a genius bar! I really doubt that the authorized resseler would replace it easily. As a result, I'm not going to use another smart cover ever again. Just bought the new iPad, which only started on sale here in may, 11th, exactly a week ago!

That is why I have a skin on the back. I highly recommend Bodyguardz which I use.

Pretty bad design IMO opinion. Kinda defeats the purpose of using a smart case if you have to handle it with so mix care without your iPad being damaged. I have the same issue with my iPad Pro 12.9. The hinge part of my smart case have left some pretty ugly scratches on the side. Apple was kind enough to send a shipping box so I can send it in for review and hopefully repair/replacement.
