Don't do it man! Unless you're an old boy or really eccentric and happy to be on your own.

You will look like a muppet.

Plus, making it a habit isn't your choice – niccotine is one of the most addictive drugs there is. I thought that I could have the odd cigarette and then 5 years and 20 a day later, I realised I was wrong!

At last a non-smoker now though:)

Exactly the same with me. Used to smoke the odd cigarette down the pub with mates and eventually ended up buying them and smoking 20 a day. Have now quit.

The only reason people look calm and sated when smoking is because they're relieving the with withdrawal symptoms that smoking created in the first place. DO NOT START.

Oh, and no one who smokes ever mentions all the spitting and hacking up **** that comes with constantly filling your lungs cancerous tars – that’s usually suppressed in public and relieved in private. Nasty.

Says the man to the Macintosh forum.

FWIW, nicotine levels in most pipe-blended tobaccos are much lower than cigarettes and cigars.

Even after the 3-4 people at the beginning of this thread reminded people not to start discussing "health" issues, a bunch of you were still stupid enough to do it. Totally off-topic.

If you can't answer any of phreakout's questions, then just be quiet. Nobody cares for your health advice, and you're not important enough to just cut in and give your own 2 cents on the health effects of smoking. Nobody even asked you about it.

I can't believe how valuable some people think their opinions are.

I'm not one to encourage underage smoking, or smoking at all, but I see pipe use as a potentially healthy form of tobacco use.

It's a bleedin' pain in the ass to smoke a pipe. You have to carry cleaners, screens, a scraping tool, a loose leaf pouch and a butane lighter. It's not like buying a pack of cigarettes and a Zippo. You can't carry all that around in your pocket, and if you did, you'd get ash all over your pocket lining. It's not something you do on "smoke break" at work and it's not something you can do while clubbing or driving. It doesn't look cool, isn't drawn into the lungs and doesn't have near the potential for abuse and addiction as cancer sticks.

I have a nice green Boswell (local guy with world-class pipes) that I use a few times a year:

I smoked a pipe back in my undergrad years. Still do occasionally now.
My advice, go to a pipe/tobacco shop. Find a pipe that you like (you should be able to do this for under $30). As for tobacco the store had a sampler pack, so from that i found a decent local blend that had a cognac flavor and another that was a mild peach flavor. I then went from there. Also pipes are a pain in the arse. You have to clean them, replace screens in them, keep the dang thing lit, etc. Want to go smoke at a friends place? Ok, grab your pipe, matches, tobacco pouch and then you are ready to go! Its just a bit cumbersome to carry around IMHO. I now only smoke cigs.

But to add my personal opinion, you are 16-17, so are you even of legal age to smoke? Though, your body, your choice.

Cheers

Since you seem to know so much about smoking, I have a question: Is smoking weed any less healthy than cigarettes? I'm under the impression that it's "healthier" than cigarettes because there isn't as many chemicals in it, but I'm just curious.

And again, I don't wanna hear about the medical implications of smoking since it wasn't asked. I don't smoke, and never would. I even do research in cancer treatment, and yet I haven't opened my mouth on lung cancer or anything else. People make their own choices, and people dig their own grave. I'm sure they know that already. They wanna smoke anyway.

Pipes do require some knowledge and work, but they're nice if you can get the hang of them.

Here's a little fun quote that I've seen comparing different tobacco: Cigarettes are like skanks. Cigars are like pretty but expensive *********s. Pipes are like long-term lovers. ;)

Smoking a pipe makes one look needy? And insecure?

Wouldn't caring what other people think about you becuase of what you wear or do make you insecure? And needy?

I don't want to cast blanket aspersions on all pipe smokers. But in my experience, many pipe smokers take up that habit not because they do not care what others think, but because they do care what others think, and think that pipe smoking will make them look interesting.

^^What, you mean they're also the people who wanna wear red silk robes, black slippers, and a monocle?

I guess there IS some truth to it. I mean, it's like wine connoisseurs --- most of it is showy bull**** made to impress. However, I'm sure there are some people who love smoking so much that they actually like testing out other flavours of the stuff. There are very few of these people.

Well, isnt that the same thing as keeping up with the latest fashion trend, driving a sports car, getting a face lift, etc? One of the reasons that i continue to smoke is that it is a social thing. Me and my friends tend to take smoke breaks together, and it is a time to catch-up between classes. Besides, the smoke cloud keeps all of the non-smokers away. :D

BTW, Apple Hobo, there is nothing wrong with a skank....hehe

It's unfiltered burning vegetable matter. It could be clippings from your lawn and it would be less healthy than a filtered cigarette. The thing is that it isn't physiologically addictive, typical users don't chain smoke joints in public and frequency of use is very low compared to cigarettes. Just throwing a dart, I would estimate that getting high say once a month (~8-14 times per year, spaced out) has negligible short term and no long-term health effects.

I don't smoke, and never would.

I've never smoked a cigarette (and I don't smoke weed either).

FWIW, I don't use my pipe "in public". I'll sometimes walk at night or use it around company, but I've never used it at a bar, work, school or anything like that. It's a relaxing thing best enjoyed alone or with some close friends.

First off, pipe tobacco smells and tastes wonderful.

Second, a pipe has to be broken in, and in the beginning it's very hard to keep the tobacco lit. So, for the first bit do not get discouraged. After a while you'll get the hang of it.

Okay, I never said I wanted to make a habbit of smoking a pipe, I just wanted to try it. I'm aware that it's not great to do, but it's not exactly bad for you either. I've even read that pipe smokers tend to live longer than non-smokers because of how it reduces stress, but I don't plan on smoking for this reason anyway. I just want to try it like you try a new kind of food or tea or anything, I'm just curious. I appreciate everyone's concern for my health, but I didn't intend on starting a thread on the health risks of pipe smoking.
By the way, thanks for the positive posts:) I was looking at some different shapes, and I really like the look of Author pipes. What a cool art pipe carving is.

hey man. Do what feels right to you don't just listen to other people who don't really know you. Don't inhale and it doesn't matter what kind of pipe you use just make sure it's a good wooden or wale bone one. It is better than cigeretts and can be a nice way to relax after a stressful day. But don't worry about it and do you, not what other people tell you to do...

another thing to try is hookah. You smoke a tobacco called shisha which is pure raw tobacco mixed with molasses and flavoring, only .5 % nicotine and 0 % tar. Most cigeretts have 15% nicotine and 25% tar. It's a smooth smoke and not to bad on you. Also it has the smallest chance of addiction.

I remember visiting my grandparents and the house always had this wonderful smell to it, the smell went away when I was around 12-13 years old. I recently asked my grandmother what it was, she said it was the pipe my grandfather smoked. He died about a year ago due to long-term firefighting injuries. I've been thinking about getting a pipe and finding out what tobacco he smoked just so I could smell it again.

QFFT.

I can't believe some of the people in this thread. Arbitrary blanket generalizations are always fun for everyone!

I have a pipe. I smoke it about four times a year - the four times a year I drink really good scotch with friends. I'm 26, and I don't give a rat ass what anyone thinks about it. It's got bugger all to do with influencing someone else's opinions of me. I enjoy it for me.

I'm with PB too - cigarette smoke is such an incredibly foul smell, but I enjoy the small of vanilla pipe tobacco.

A friend had his hookah going the other night at a party, loaded with some blueberry flavored tobacco. I tried it, and loved it. Not something I'll make a habit of, but nice nonetheless. Very smooth.

The OP may not have been of age when this thread started almost 3 years ago, but depending on were in the world they live, they might be now.

We should call out to them, but they haven't posted since 2006 as phreakout13.

Good that everyone got on subject, the OP may oneday revisit the post out of curiosity, maybe not but surly others will find this forum the way i found it, by searching the web, i was looking for a new pipe, but at least the answer will be posted here if they have the patients to sort through all the "ohh don't do that, it's bad for you" non-sense. I mean after all most of these people are old enough to make their own decisions in life so we should answer their questions when possible and shut the hell up when we have no idea what were talking or asking about...

Logic and reason, to define those words for yourself is to discover it's true meaning and to ignore them is to devolve into our primeate cousins....
