Actually just about every computer manufacturer has a clause that states they have the right to refuse service if the computer is not use within manufacturer's specifications. As with Apple's case, this smoking would fall under their clause as quoted

b. Limitations. The Plan does not cover:

(ii) Damage to the Covered Equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty installation, repair, or maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider), unauthorized modification, extreme environment (including extreme temperature or humidity), extreme physical or electrical stress or interference, fluctuation or surges of electrical power, lightning, static electricity, fire, acts of God or other external causes;

(v) Service necessary to comply with the regulations of any government body or agency arising after the date of this Plan;

I despise smoking and how many smokers I have encountered have been inconsiderate and rude (for example when waiting in line outside, they will puff up when they can easily ask the person behind them if their place in line can be held for a smoke, I'm sure most people would oblige and be happy to hold it. I would no doubt.

I'm siding with Apple here. I would never as an employer subject my employees to any physical harm if possible.

I support Apple with this one. I wouldn't want to work on a Mac or PC that came from a smokers home either. The smoke creates residue and is basically like a syrup once it's combined with dust.

I wish I knew how to open up my MacBook so I can blow the dust out. :(

All I'm hearing here is "I hate smoking, I love Apple", which applies to me also, but are you guys even reading what is written here? I'll speak slowly and say it again......

They are refusing service based on it being hazardous to the technicians, regardless of who pays, get it? It's not just the warranty. Even if you are willing to pay cash for it they will turn you away. Nicotine on your fingers is a health risk, then wear gloves you panzies!! Someone sue these idiots before they try to save the whole world from using their heads for something other than echo chambers!

Again, I'll eat the biggest crow you can find, but it seems that mysteriously no one is posting any data.

If the user smoke, your computer smoke too.

Sure, they claim to have their own minds

Time for a motivational. :D

Anyway, the Macbook Pro service refusal is suspect but reading the 2nd story I'm behind Apple on that one. It's not the smoking, it's really user damage and the user was expecting replacement. Sorry bud, you and your smoke trashed your iMac.

She said that the computer is beyond economical repair due to tar from cigarette smoke!

I love the knee jerks on here with no knowledge of the facts. On the one hand we have the sceptics ( Hi and welcome to the forum guys) and on the other - much much much sadder - the usual mac religionists.

How cool is it that we stopped believing in pie in the sky just so we could bow down at the alter of the job?

Face it guys Apple are cu*ts just the same as many money- grabbing sobs. We just prefer the way they screw us to the way the others do. Doesn't make them any better though. Grow up an know they are conning us out of every penny then can in whatever way they can, or do you think SJ is the fuc*kin tooth fairy?

its ********, is ford gonna deny my f150 warranty because i took it mudding and got it nasty? you wont see it happen much. Anyone who agrees with that is dumb. its a way to get out of repairing for free a totally ****ed machine. Its dishonest and in this area apple is no better than anyone, it makes me sick. What about machines in places of work or dusty environments like factories? BULL.

If there is evidence of mud or water in the oil(very obvious if even a small amount gets in), then hell yes they will deny the warranty. Mud seriously shortens the life of a vehicle and you shouldn't expect damage from it to be covered. (from someone who used to wheel a lot but can't afford to anymore)

The warranty doesn't nned to specificly exclude smoke. The warranty covers manufacturing defects and excludes abuse. Internal grime, from whatever the source, is abuse and won't be covered.

At home
I worked for one of the largest customers of Apple computers in the UK and one computer room had 30 Mac towers in (not sure of model). The supervisor of the section kept telling me how crap Macs were as they kept failing because of over heating.
Then one day whilst I'm running tests on the Macs, the cleaning lady came in and started cleaning them (they were usually left on for long periods) - but she was using wax furniture polish and lots of it - don't they look lovely and shiny she asked. Failure problem solved. Believe me the very toxic nicotine and tar from cigarettes is equally sticky.

I'm with Apple.

Since nobody else has mentioned this yet... computers that have been smoked around for a while start to smell REALLY bad. You can't run one in a clean environment without a stench quickly filling the air.

I bought about a half dozen PCs for parts a few years back and quickly realized the former owner was a serious chain smoker. They smelled so bad that I couldn't take it anymore and threw most of the parts and cases away- and this was in my GARAGE!

Shame on Apple for doing this!!!

IMO perspective and consistency are important. Consider, then, Apple uses the (currently) trendy pigtail CFL light bulb as a graphic on their web site and in Apple literature. Pigtail bulbs constitute a toxic spill if you break one! For Apple to take their position on nicotine is totally inconsistent with other Apple policies. Shame on Apple!

However, I don't recall Apple ever being labeled as politically sound or logical.
(Don't shoot the messenger, haha)

Here's another article about this.

LINK

Apple isn't formally commenting on the issue or responding to media requests for comment, namely regarding whether there's a threshold for cigarette smoke exposure beyond which a computer won't be serviced. Is one cigarette too much? 200? The answer is probably far less scientific than that: If a technician doesn't like cigarette smoke and your computer smells a bit smoky, it probably won't get serviced.

I can understand the policy here, but Apple's failure to mention this issue in its warranty materials is out of line. To leave consumers on the hook for repairing their multi-thousand dollar machine by themselves, without notifying them in advance that cigarette smoke exposure could void their warranty, well... sounds a lot like typical Apple behavior, to be honest.

Honestly, I'm on the fence about this one.

This is what makes me mad. If Apple wants to exclude warranty service on the computers of people who smoke, it should be clearly noted on the warranty materials.

http://blogs.computerworld.com/15136/apple_voids_applecare_warranty_for_smokers

they are voiding the applecare warranty for smokers!! i type this while smoking a cigarette right now :D ... but still thats pretty screwed.. a good percentage of mac owners smoke around there machines..

What percentage? Are you pulling numbers off the top of your head? I am typing this message right now and I am not smoking. I guess I don't fit in the "good percentage".

If you are going to make a claim, make sure you back it up.

I agree with apple. I don't want to work on any computers that smell like an ashtray. It smells worst than a freshly soiled diaper.

I'm a former smoker (quit 5 years ago) and know first hand the difference smoking vs. not smoking makes to clothes, equipment, and everything else around you. Even when I smoked I had long before stopped smoking in my home and car because I know how much second-hand smoke damages things. Of course the worst damage was to my health. I just hope I didn't stop too late to cause permanent problems.

I can't say I blame Apple. If I were an Apple tech I wouldn't want to work on a nicotine-infested machine. I can't say I blame anything or anyone that outcasts smoking anymore. It's just plain awful to inflict it second hand on non-smokers, in whatever form. I can't stand it anymore, and just voted to ban it from bars and restaurants in my community.

If it's a problem to you smokers, then just take better care of your equipment by not smoking around it. How difficult is that?

The type of smoke is uniquely worse than normal build-up, particularly that it is sticky and hard to remove.

Hate to have to do that...:p It was the third or fourth time I've seen that mistake in the last ten minutes on these forums.

Anyway, smoke build up can cause damage, just like if I spilt a pint of lager on my MBP I'd be screwed.
