Wow. Hmmm... I have a Flickr account but don’t use it. I host with Zenfolio but am thinking of switching to SmugMug in November when I renew. I have about 10 years worth of photos at Zenfolio though, which is a big hassle to switch.

I will keep watch of this news.

Wow! The only reason I hadn't moved from Flickr before was because I had so much there already. I wonder what the pricing structure will become. Hopefully we'll get the best of both SmugMug & Flickr out of this.

Wow... I used to be a HUGE flickr user back in the day till Yahoo ruined it with ads and changing how it worked. So I left it for Google Photos. I've used SmugMug but it didn't quite click with me - nothing wrong with the service or anything - the company is actually really cool and the service was excellent. Should be a revitalization for Flickr indeed.

I can't believe how many people still use @yahoo.com accounts these days.

Yahoo forced people to have yahoo emails to be able to access Flickr.

I created one as I had to to use Flickr. Never had one before and never access it. Hopefully I can change it to my gmail account soon.

That would be useful. I get masses of Ray-Ban adverts, messages from Africa wanting me to accept multi-million dollar payments, Russian girls wanting to meet me and various other forms of spam, and I only use Yahoo for Flickr ;)

Cheers :)

I haven't linked my account to any of my devices and I haven't checked on it in years. Who knows what's in there!

I used Flickr for a while, years ago. It got all messy.
Switched to SmugMug and have been well pleased with their services.

I hope that SmugMug will do well with it and not make a big mess.

I used to use Flickr years ago, but switched to Smugmug when I got serious about my photography. I designed my site with the help of the “heroes” as they are called along with the helpful folks on the dgrin forum. Customer service is great. Designing my site was relatively painless. You can really go all out as I did and have it personalized the way you want it. I have no complaints about Smugmug. Smugmug is great for my usage.

A website I use allows for Flickr import of photos. I've always hosted all of my photos on Flickr that I needed for this website (www.ravelry.com). I hope they don't move to an expensive paid model.

No one who is a photographer.

BURN! Lol... Taking no prisoners their @mollyc .. - sorry the cool kids say shade now or something dont they?
[doublepost=1524325824][/doublepost]For yonks I have toyed with the idea of a smugmug site but the thought of having to curate and organise and house keep it was just too much so interested to see if this merger makes any of that more seamless.

Anyone else get 30, yes, I counted, 30 emails from Flickr titled "Flickr agrees to be acquired by SmugMug - what this means for you." ??? WTF? is this for real or were they hacked?
[doublepost=1524335472][/doublepost]...they came in at varying times between 4-8 am

I dunno.

I haven't used Smugmug in years, but isn't it still a paid-only service? OTOH I'd guess that of the millions of Flickr users only a smallish precentage pay. The logical conclusion is that Smugmug dumps the freeloaders and keeps the payers. Or maybe keeps them just for the discussion groups. I'd say for most Flickr pro users the Smugmug plan of equivalent cost ($50/yr) would be pretty equivalent.

I'm happy smugmug user, I'm not sure about how this works for me, but I can't complain about the service I've gotten with smugmug.

I did the opposite -- switched from SmugMug to Zenfolio some years ago and haven't looked back since. It was a hassle transferring the images from one site to the other, but it was doable. What I did was to use both services for a while until I was really sure which one I preferred, and then made the switch. If I recall correctly, it was at the time that Smugmug was raising its fees and also I found that it was much quicker and easier to grab an image and share it on another site (usually a web-based forum such as this one) with Zenfolio than it was with Smugmug. Still is. With regard to fees, I pay $40.00/yr for Zenfolio, which I think is the basic level, since I don't really need to store my RAW images or set up arrangements for selling my photos through them. I don't do videos at all. I was an early subscriber to Zenfolio, back when it was first starting up, and I think my fee is also based on that as well.

As for Flickr, I had an account that I just used for odds-and-ends of images a long time ago back in the day when it was a totally free service. None of the images was all that important to me and since I don't recall now the account name or the email address I used for it, I guess that account will be going by the wayside, if it hadn't already at the time they began charging fees, which is fine with me. I didn't realize that Flickr gives 1 TB free now....must've happened after their initial change to being fee-based? I long ago dumped Yahoo and don't have a Yahoo address any more, as it was becoming problematic. One of my friends still uses Yahoo as her email address and periodically she gets hacked and has to clean things out. I don't know why she doesn't get smart and get rid of Yahoo and go with Gmail or some other service instead.

It's been 1TB free since I joined. I mostly use it to post images on this site.
If I have to move away I'll probably just create my own website using Squarespace or something similar.

Take a look at Zenfolio; it's really quite convenient and easy to set up! Much easier and quicker than doing your own website via Squarespace. Linking my images to here or other places is convenient and I have never experienced any issues with that.
