rigormortis, I'm lucky there, he doesn't collect photos, movies, etc., mostly written data. But thanks for the head's up.
I'm the collected of such items.

For a long while Hubby used only 4 total memory rams; very, very slow. Then I learned it could handled as much as 16 rams and I was sure it would be a speed demon; for a while it was, then slowed down again. I agree, it is the AppleWorks that he uses mostly and Eudora. Trying to get him into Pages, but is hard to push a chain up a hill. No abut the lack of Rosetta, still miss it. Never liked Safari, using FireFox.

zEbenezum. Well, can one still get the older OS? I'm using Mountain Lion and really have NO desire to upgrade to ElCapitan. If it isn't broken...

Sorry Fishrrman, I got backlogged and just now saw your suggestion. humorous as it is. This hunt has turned into a overwhelming search. At first it was about protecting our Macs from hackers based on the Digital Goddes's suggestion. This let to the fact that what was being offered on her website was only for El Capitan, and we were told to upgrade our operating systems. Hubby's computer really is super slow and I'm thinking perhaps I best hunt for a USB3 SSD etc. The Mac Min mid 2010, would this work? (crucial M500)

If I know one thing, when a man is retired, it's a wife's job to keep him busy if she wants him to keep him healthy.

Fishrrman, Didn't see the lower portion of your post at first. I am very fortunate, I don't share my Mac with anyone (grin). but, the idea which you propose sounds like a good idea. Thanks

If you do not need ANY newer apps not supported by SL and you do not surf the web, I would keep it that way.
I do suggest you download (purchase) / redeem current OS as it is supported by your machine.

When Apple releases new OS it MAY NOT be compatible with your device, and you would not be able to purchase El Capitan.

The mac in question, regarding staying in SL or going to Mt. Lion is as follows:

http://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6377/os-x-mountain-lion

Could not understand how to find (redeem current OS) which you mentioned above, but did determine that Hubby's mac mini could use M. Lion.

System Requirements
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) Mac Mini in question is [Mac Mini MC270LL/A (mid-2010)

Your Mac needs:
• OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
• 2 GB or more of memory
• 8 GB or more of available space

The reviews on this page are really bad, The customer entitled 5.0 out of 5 stars
For Intellectual Property Owners, really blows the concept of "back door" out of the water. Of course, the only intellectual property I play with is writing back and forth with folks on MacRumor.
ada,9c1. Looks like hubby's mac will take on MT. Lion according to this info above.

However, this next question may be a whole new thread, regarding the continued 6 pages from his Disk Utility which needs to be repaired every day, apparently. So, I'd better take this newly viewed consideration for a slowing down Snow Leopard to the forums>Macs>Desktops>Mac Mini. This tread is getting really long.

Thank you, adam9c1. for your help!

How to redeem a new purchase? Go to the app store and find OS X El Capitan and select "Get". It will download and it will be available for future downloads under that Apple ID.

It is possible the hard drive in the computer is failing. I suggest get a bootable backup copy of what you have and then upgrade the original at the very least.

Please don't laugh at what I am going to share. I knew better back when I was on a G4 or G5 Power Mac, which is simuilar to try to change a tire when it is on the car driving along. AND never try to clean up your hard drive with disk utility while it is driving the computer. I forgot that the Mac Mini SL came with a disk, which we still have. I popped that disk in the Mac Mini SL, restarted using the disk and almost all of the repairs were made using disk utility.

Are you saying that I can download the El Capitan and save on his/my computer it for later?

That is possible and if you think you need 10.11 later it is wise move. Just open Mac App Store and click El Capitan link at the right side of the screen, next you see El Capitan page with the download link at the left corner. After download is finished quit the installer which opens automatically and copy installer to another drive for safekeeping.

Please describe exactly what kind of error messages you are seeing in Disk Utility? Without further details its impossible to help.

Hubby's mac mini could use M. Lion.

You can purchase Mountain Lion at page linked on your last post, is it worthwhile to do so? Maybe, maybe not. It comes down software compatibility, most of the software you mentioned previously won't work on anything newer than 10.6.8 and most of the web browsers are already abandoning support for Mountain Lion...

Dear Patth9 - I'm running Snow Leopard myself. If you run a software update on hubby's mac mini ( so upper left choose :apple: and choose 'software update' from the dropdown) this will install an 'App Store' in the drop down section of the Apple Menue :apple: and alllow you to install the El Capitan update directly from Snow Leopard without buying anything.

I've tried saving the Installer to a USB thumbdrive using terminal and it doesn't actually work in Snow Leopard. You have to be using Mountain Lion or Mavericks or El Capitan.

Yes I know it won't work in Snow Leopard. Thats why I meant copying the installer to external drive using Finder. Installer can be used as long as OP has a working Mac.

Wish I had known that before pulling my hair out trying to fix my syntax in terminal . In any event if the OP runs the Snow Leopard update that should allow them to go straight to El Cap

I agree Apple should provide clearer instructions, support documentation only mentions 10.9-10.11 being compatible with the installmedia command https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372. I wonder why Apple doesn't include option within the installer to create instal media? It would be much easier for average user compared to command line...?

"Well, the reason is my dear husband doesn't want to give up AppleWorks or Eudora (both still work). I bought us Pages and I keep telling him he simply MUST start learning Pages. Eudora will have to become Thunderbird, I guess, which I am still trying to figure out myself at times."

FIshrrman's simple solution to preserve marital harmony in your home:
Leave the husband with the old computer and the old software he likes.
Get yourself something newer, with a newer OS. ;)

Sage advice.

Many of the benefits (especially connectivity) of more recent versions are not available to older computers. I updated my early 2009 Mini to Mountain Lion, remain well pleased with that. I see little benefit in updating any further.. I reckon it should see me right for another couple or three years.
