90 % of my families data usage is on WiFi. Even more now with COVID. 5G and unlimited, tho I have the unlimited plan, don’t really mater to me.
Is there no point in going for the iPhone 12 if you aren't ready yet to switch your plan? I heard AT&T is keeping all grandfathered unlimited plan users strictly to 4G. If that is the case, perhaps we can all switch our lines to T-Mobile or Verizon and take advantage of new account sign ups?
Do you have a link to an article that confirms this? I’m curious as well as I’m still on the grandfathered plan
Ya. Not sure how easy is to program sims to only attach to lte vs 5g on same tower. As one on grandfathered plan as well if your phone has 5G modem how can they do that? Other than not allow it on our old plans? Curious of details although for our area having any 5G is likely down the road another year or two more interested in the quality of the x55 modem from Qualcom and the improvements to the cameras on the 12 Pro Max over my 11 Pro Max
The old grandfathered UDP plans have been terrible for 3 or 4 years now.
ATT will be able to block you from using 5G, easily at that. They're not going to activate a 5G SIM for a phone on 4G plans.
My plan is $130 for two lines on Unlimited Elite. If you have a FAN or Signature discount, you save $10 per line. California tax brings my total bill to $140. Plus you get free HBO.
Yes, I am on a 6GB shared plan and the diferrence between that and an unlimited plan for my wife and I would be about $55month. So, I wont get it either if they can truly block it. 3 diggerent AT&T people told me I would be able to access it anyway, that the plan didnt really matter, it was the device that matters. I dont have 5g in my town anyway, but in Dallas not far from me, they do. So, I guess time will tell if I actually can access it or not. They did say that you had to have a 5G phone with a NEW sim card. That the old sim cards were not 5G sim cards. So I went back to ordering the att carrier phone instead of the sim free phone.
Keep your eyes open they’ll be promotions you may be able to participate inOne problem we only have two lines for me and wife. This requires 5 lines at $45 a month each. That’s $225 a month. Right now i pay $100 for my grandfathered line and $69 for wife’s. Still $50 cheaper than this plan requiring 5 lines. Most of plans good only if you’re in larger groups
If you do not have unlimited, you will not be able to access 5G. Just like they restricted tethering and WiFi calls in the past for those not on the appropriate plans. ATT has made this very clear.I also currently have a shared plan and have no intention to change to unlimited since I'm now WFH and only using about 1GB of cellular data each month. My plan is to buy the unlocked SIM-free 12 Pro and use my existing SIM. I honestly don't care if I get 5G service or not, I just don't want to change my existing plan or be forced by AT&T to upgrade to unlimited. Has AT&T made any official statement on using an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro without having an unlimited plan?
You will probably get better LTE service with new iPhone assuming this years Qualcomm modem will be better than Intel.I also currently have a shared plan and have no intention to change to unlimited since I'm now WFH and only using about 1GB of cellular data each month. AT&T Loyalty Dept. recently offered to remove $10 a month off my bill going forward indefinitely. Throw in the fact that 5G is pretty premature for just about everyone with respect to coverage, so I have no desire to get a 5G plan. Also all their 5G plans are worse than my current plan. AND 4G LTE is super fast for my usage and found in the areas I frequent. I will probably switch to a 5G plan in a few years. No rush. Still probably getting the 12 Pro Max.Is there no point in going for the iPhone 12 if you aren't ready yet to switch your plan? I use LTE as well and lots of data (probably small compared to many I do not watch TV/movie on the phone so its good just a bit weak at house so often on WiFi instead hoping the x55 Qualcomm might improve that though for when in yare and WiFi weak outside. Also the camera improvements again are of interest so probably with take advantage of being on the new every year update plan with apple. But yeah 5G is not going to be in our town much soon and unlikely in our rural subdivision anytime or the far tower that gives me only 1-2 barsWhich is great and all that I care about to be honest. I don't need 5G right now and am fine with only 4G LTE for the small amount of data I use.
Just want to make sure I got this right.....I’m on a grandfathered unlimited data plan With AT&T and I won’t get 5g on the iPhone 12 pro?
Your comment made me switch my AT&T Unlimited plan. I had the old plus plan which costs $215for 5 lines now the new plan is $175 for 5 lines. I'll be saving $40 a month with paperless billing and auto pay. Thank you! that's $480 a year which pays for a new iPhone each year if I do the next upgrade AT&T upgrade! The old AT&T “grandfather” plan is no longer the best deal around. I did a comparison recently and found I could do better with one of the new unlimited plans from either AT&T or Verizon. Verizon was a bit cheaper, so I switched to them and got the new account bonus as well.
If you compare your current plan to the new plans you will see that the new ones offer 5g but the old ones only offer 4g late, if they were going to give the old plans 5g they would've already done it.Do you have a link to an article that confirms this? I get free HBO with att which I actually want and I save over $50 each month on directv. I also save on my business internet by att. So for me it’s actually cheaper to keep att.Why not just avoid this infuriating bs altogether and switch to Tmobile? It’s like $50 for unlimited with 5G and tethering no additional cost... I’ve never regretted switching away from at&t and that seems like an even better decision now with 5G and not having to pay a cent more on my bill.

Eventually, the Grandfathered Plans will have access to 5G. If not, watch the lawsuits roll in. That's why they're offering the phone for basically nothing if you agree to switch to a new data plan.Correct. You’re grandfathered into a 4G plan. To use 5G, you need to update to a plan that includes 5G service.
If might be advisable to do that now, because at the moment, the carriers are not charging an additional fee for 5G. That could change in the future.
I have the last round of unlimited plans from att. Plan comes with watch tv and free showtime as well for $80. To get 5g I would have to upgrade to the new plans, lose the free showtime, and lose the free watch tv access, which saves me $100+ on a cable subscription, for $75. I’ll stick with me 140mbps down lte speeds. 5g won’t be useful anywhere around me for years to come.
