I ummd and arrrd about the two, I decided to go for a MacBook, mainly because its smaller. I got the standard model. 1.83 512mb 60gb.. I added 2gig of ram and a 120gb harddrive, which doesn't void the warranty, its well worth getting. I paid £52 for my ram, and its even cheaper in the us, the harddrive was 30quid. Inside the box came the manual on how to change the ram and the hd was just as easy.

You can also save even more money by going the ADC route.

Price under EDU - MB Black, 2 gb ram - $1557
Price under ADC - MB Black, 2 gb ram - $1507
Price under EDU - MBP 2.2, 160 gb 5400 HDD - $1866
Price under ADC - MBP 2.2, 160 gb 5400 HDD - $1659

Keep in mind, ADC Student membership costs an additional $99 - not factored in above ADC prices. But you get free copy of Leopard ($69 in EDU store otherwise) as ADC member, and you CANNOT have take advantage of the free iPod Nano promotion.

Something to think about.
The free iPod Nano promotion makes up for the ADC price difference. And thus the $99 is to cover Leopard. Not worth it in my opinion. Thats better for when there is no promotions (you also can't get the free printer!).

if all you're doing is typing and browsing a lot and not much gaming or video editing then go with the Macbook instead of the MBP.
Video editing is a CPU intensive activity, rather than a GPU one, and until the recent update, performance of, say FCP, was basically identical on a MB and MBP.

With the SR update, thanks to the faster FSB and processor, the MBPs offer a performance boost - but nothing like extent when using a GPU intensive app like Motion.
