It would be better just to get a new iMac.How about replacing the old HDD in your parent's vintage iMac with a SATA SSD? There are lots of YouTube tutorials.
That's what I did with the 2011 iMac that I use in my home office. It's still a nice machine.
The new iMacs are great too..... If money is no object I highly recommend them.
Good photos. Obviously a comforting space for those who like warm tones and who look at an iMac as an objet d'art, which is not unreasonable. Fine for a language lab, but be aware that all that yellow, especially the iMac, mean that if anyone ever intends images work they will have their color perception substantially modified and no longer reasonably accurate.I'm well aware that Apple will be releasing an updated iMac in the near future. However, sometimes we don't have the luxury of timing our purchase with the most recent release. You buy what is available when you need it.
I'm thrilled with the performance of my friend's beautiful (yellow/gold) iMac. It's a huge upgrade over her 2011 21.5" iMac which is coincidentally still running flawlessly.
Anyway, I just wanted to share how the new iMac (16Gb/512 SSD) looks in her language academy....
I absolutely love the quality of the display / all aluminum enclosure / speed / color
Despite the technological marvel of these M series SoCs I wrote this post from my old trusty 2011 27" iMac which is also working flawlessly. I'm of the opinion that Apple makes reliable computers....

Ah yes, The Little Lebowski Urban Achievers, proud we are of all of them.I also like the whole ambiance of the room. Very well done and certainly a great environment for young, leaning minds.
My biggest gripe is the Africa-sized gap between eastern Russia and Alaska. If that's a common representation in Asia, then Asians must be shocked when they see a globe lol. This is simply an Asian centric world map... No biggie..... They are common here in Asia.
In the end, maps are simply representations of our natural world.
Mapmaking is hard, because one is depicting thousands of 3D square kilometers on a tiny 2D map. That is why there are are so many different projections with mapmakers trying to communicate different things. My biggest gripe is the Africa-sized gap between eastern Russia and Alaska. Thank you for the kind post.Love the setup, and really cute blinds. The yellow iMac fits very well on that environment.
My favorite iMac colors are the orange one, and the green one. If I had to choose, I don’t know which one I’d get, but fortunately I’m more of a Mac mini user. I’d love a Mac mini redesigned in those colors tho.
Have you considered upgrading the 2014 iMac? New SSD, Ram upgrades?Looks wonderful. I agree the iMacs are a great computer. I am going today to pick up a new one. I am in Toronto so in Canadian dollars this one works out to about $3,100. I last bought a 27" iMac in Dec 2014. Think in Canadian dollars I paid about $3400 although I believe I am taking the same upgraded options as earlier. My 2014 version still works, almost flawlessly. Perfect for browsing, email, etc although slowing down when I have far too many applications going at once. Hope this one is as good as my 2014 iMac. However am still going for the silver version on my end.
Looks like an Apple advertisement. Nice setup!I'm well aware that Apple will be releasing an updated iMac in the near future. However, sometimes we don't have the luxury of timing our purchase with the most recent release. You buy what is available when you need it.

No I hadn't, to be honest. I tend to use only one machine at a time. I did purchase a MacBook Air in late 2019 and I have only used it, perhaps 10x? But it might be worthwhile as you mention to upgrade this older one as I do find I prefer a larger screen than a laptop offers. Thanks for the reminder to do so.Have you considered upgrading the 2014 iMac? New SSD, Ram upgrades?
You may be surprised by some of the speed differences you can get, especially if your 2014 iMac has a spinning hard drive. No I hadn't, to be honest. I tend to use only one machine at a time. No need to buy bother with SSD and RAM upgrades, which can be difficult to install and fussy once they are installed, when you've already got an excellent machine in the 2019 MacBook Air. Just connect the Air to a large external monitor, which (if you don't already own one) will probably cost less than the upgrades. No I hadn't, to be honest. I tend to use only one machine at a time.
