Do something you like.

Very much agree. Although I'd add one caveat - "providing you can pay your bills". If the 'something you like' won't pay your bills then work your way down the list of things you like until you find something that does.

I like playing music, annoyingly, and I'm a much better musician than I am a programmer. I can earn a decent living as a programmer, but not as a musician (I know, I tried for long enough!). Luckily programming was #3 on my list (after graphic design).

I love music. I never wanted to wake up and dread playing because it was my JOB.

Like anything else, music takes a certain amount of luck in addition to hard work. Most people trying it are thinking something like rock star, but numerous other avenues exist, if you can find them.

I wound up a few notches down my list also after dreams of being a supermodel's boy toy didn't pan out :)

Do something you like, providing it can pay the bills. But, do something you don't mind hating on the occasional Monday morning.

I've been a graphic designer for over 18 years now and if I had my time again I would choose a different career path. The pay just isn't that good. If you run your own company or go freelance there is an opportunity to make good money, but you have to work bloody hard for it. I do enjoy my job most of the time, but as an industry I still think design is undervalued.
