Limitations The Plan does not cover:
...
(ii) Damage to the Covered Equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including
faulty installation, repair, or maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized
Service Provider), unauthorized modification, extreme environment (including extreme
temperature or humidity), extreme physical or electrical stress or interference, fluctuation or
surges of electrical power, lightning, static electricity, fire, acts of God or other external causes;
...
how much is it just to get a new screen? is it a hard thing to replace for a DIY?
is there anyway he can buy insurance or a warranty and then say it broke?
No, but if you/he has house insurance it may well cover accidental damage.
If you fit it yourself that will void the warranty if anything else goes wrong.
Perhaps, but aside from being dishonest, he may have to provide proof that the device is "insurable".is there anyway he can buy insurance or a warranty and then say it broke?
You'd still need to cover the deductable, and the premiums may increase as a result of the claim. You may just be better off pricing out the repair. No, but if you/he has house insurance it may well cover accidental damage.
How about trying to be an adult and paying for it rather than committing fraud?![]()

It isn't worth your trouble trying to do it yourself. The odds of messing something up are very high, and then you'd be out even more money.how much is it just to get a new screen? is it a hard thing to replace for a DIY?

Home owner's insurance covers damage that can happen to your property (whether the house itself or possessions within the house).i figured that. what is house insurance?
Took a 15inch to get fixed for work...cost was $720, yours will probably be more as it's a 17.
Apple will not sell you the part.
maybe i should just give him my MBP LOL
If he purchased it with a credit card it may have accidental damage coverage. Have him check with his credit card issuer to see.
i didnt kick it. i pulled out my phone it slipped out of my hands and BARELY touched the screen. i had no idea these things were so fragile.
As may have been said previously, appeal to his sense of friendship and ask him to turn up any possibility of fixing it under insurance. He may have to bring his mother into it if you can't pay for it, just one of those things I'm afraid.
If all this happens and you don't have to pay and if he doesn't ask you to make anything beyond a minor contribution, thank him profusely and save up for a really nice present for him.
OH YEAH I KNOW BELIEEEEVEEE MEE.
