so yeah i accidentally dropped something on my friends MBP screen. will apple care take care of it? it's cracked.

he got it in august if that matters.

Sorry to say it, but no:

Limitations The Plan does not cover:
...

(ii) Damage to the Covered Equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including
faulty installation, repair, or maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized
Service Provider), unauthorized modification, extreme environment (including extreme
temperature or humidity), extreme physical or electrical stress or interference, fluctuation or
surges of electrical power, lightning, static electricity, fire, acts of God or other external causes;
...

Applecare will not cover that damage. Go in and ask how much the repairs will be. If it totals to more than 50% of the cost of a new macbook, forget it. You'd be better off getting a new one.

is there anyway he can buy insurance or a warranty and then say it broke?

how much is it just to get a new screen? is it a hard thing to replace for a DIY?

No, but if you/he has house insurance it may well cover accidental damage.

If you fit it yourself that will void the warranty if anything else goes wrong ;).

Perhaps, but aside from being dishonest, he may have to provide proof that the device is "insurable".

You'd still need to cover the deductable, and the premiums may increase as a result of the claim. You may just be better off pricing out the repair.

No. This is fraud and MR does not condone breaking the law. the rules

It isn't worth your trouble trying to do it yourself. The odds of messing something up are very high, and then you'd be out even more money.

I was going to suggest this as well, but the deductible is likely over $1,000, which really negates any benefit. :(

Took a 15inch to get fixed for work...cost was $720, yours will probably be more as it's a 17.
Apple will not sell you the part.

im freeeeeeeeeaaaaakingggggggg outtttttttt. i'm brooooookeee

i'm an 18 year old community college student that works at Lids.

lol

maybe i should just give him my MBP LOL

i figured that. what is house insurance?
Home owner's insurance covers damage that can happen to your property (whether the house itself or possessions within the house).

However, like I wrote above, odds are that the deductible is as much as a new mbp or mb, so you wouldn't get much out of it.

Not to mention that if it was a higher res screen, it'll likely be even more.

If he purchased it with a credit card it may have accidental damage coverage. Have him check with his credit card issuer to see.

is there any way we could check if he has accidental coverage without calling the CC company. his mom bought it and he doesnt want to bring her into this

Well since you are low on cash, you should talk to him about it. It was an accident and I'm sure he understands, but you've got to help him buy a new one.

And just how does one kick a mbp by accident exactly?

This is a good idea. I had forgot about that.

OP, if your friend did buy it with a credit card, he may have to pay the balance for it before it's covered (check the terms very carefully).

i didnt kick it. i pulled out my phone it slipped out of my hands and BARELY touched the screen. i had no idea these things were so fragile.

As may have been said previously, appeal to his sense of friendship and ask him to turn up any possibility of fixing it under insurance. He may have to bring his mother into it if you can't pay for it, just one of those things I'm afraid.

If all this happens and you don't have to pay and if he doesn't ask you to make anything beyond a minor contribution, thank him profusely and save up for a really nice present for him.

 For some reason I read "kicked" in your OP. Sorry.

If you dropped it from a height of 2-3 feet, that phone can gain a lot of speed and hence, force.

As for your other question, he might be able to call the CC company on his own if he has his own card (under her account). He can call himself as a card holder (which he would be) and get the details. Otherwise, I don't see anyway for him to get the exact details of her card without her.
