When my son was 15, we got him a credit car thru BOA, i never gave it to him and used it daily for the next three years it had a 2000 line... when he was 18th gave him a plat BOA Visa that had a 20K limit so he is set think all parents should do that for their Kids.

There are a couple of ways you can "game" the credit system. Let say you have a parent that has a perfect payment history on a CC, and they have good-great credit. If they add you on that CC as an autorized user, wait two months - you'll have an automatic credit history attached via that card.

You'll have no problem getting an iPhone or any phone through any carrier with a $0 deposit. I do agree with most on here that you do need to build your own credit. Unsecured or Secured credit doesnt matter much; what will matter is your ending balance each month and your payment history. If your ending balance is more than 40% of your available credit - it hurts your Credit Rating.

Remember to pay your CC bill, if that's what you go with, as soon as the payment arrives. Don't go by the "due date" on the bill. The Due Date is usually after closing of the monthly cycle. This is a unscrupilous act and I can't wait for Congress to finally regulate this industry - there are a lot more dirty tactics they use to get more money out of you.

I agree that a personal loan through your bank is the better option in the short term. You'll get a FIXED interest rate, where as with a CC you'll get one that will adjust randomly upwards at the whim of the CC company - even if you have good payment history. (re-read the paragraph above about CC companies)

The best ways to build/re-build credit is to have an auto loan or mortgage with good payment history on your report. Remember in most cases negative marks on your credit will remain for 7 years, any cosnumer lending company can report that derogatory information for up to 10 years.

I hope this information helps you to make a sound and wise decision.
