I purchased the clearance iMac because it was only $100 more than the refurbished one.

Which Imac did you get?

I have been looking at both the clearance and refurb section. The 2.8 24" is $200 more in the clearance section than the refurb section.
$1399 clearance
$1199 refurb

If Apple wants to environmentally friendly they will not repackage the computer, but instead relabel the systems and mark them as refurbished.

I purchased the 24" 2.8 for $1299, but that was with my educational discount (staff not student, way to too old to be a student) and it is already prepared for shipment. I hope this is not a purchase I live to regret.:)

Can someone tell me how much the 24" refurbished imac cost originally? Just curious about the cost savings at the $1199 price point. I got a 2.0ghz 20" imac last year, refurbished, but strongly considering replacing with the 24". I spent $999 on the 20", $200 more for the 24 at .8ghz faster seems like a great deal.

ah okay...I thought about a clearance one but I figured with the $200 saved I could then buy Applecare for it. :D

You mean before the '09's came out? I believe the 24"/2.8 refurb was selling for $250 less than new, so $1549.

Down economy be damned! I just ordered the 24" refurb. Hoping to sell my old 20" for a fair price to cover the majority of that new machine.

If the cost was $200 more, I would have gone with the refurbished one as well, but $100 didn't seem to be too much more in my mind. I didn't buy Applecare yet, but I will. Mine has already shipped, but it shipped UPS. I have never had an Apple product shipped to me except via FedEx. I really hate UPS. I am having shipped to the school and our UPS driver purposely delivers to our school after hours and of course being a school they don't leave any tag. The driver lives in the neighborhood and even though the secretary has talked to him about it several times, he just keeps doing it. UPS usually takes two to three day longer to deliver than FedEx to my location.

Now I have been looking at Macs since November. Always checking the refurb store and clearance. I dont recall in the refurb section, a computer hanging around for very long. So with it seeming that many people are buying the 24" 2.8, its hard to believe that its still there.

Probably they had a lot of stock left over because everyone was holding off to buy the latest and greatest release that had been predicted for some time. :D

I guess my reasoning in purchasing the previous model was if it was worth $1,800 on Monday, it ought to be worth the $1,200 I paid for it on Friday of the same week. I hope that I am not proven wrong.

I would bet that they are not just refurbs, but floor models and also new stock. I would also guess that they may have gotten returns from anyone who purchased less than 15 days ago...

whoa! I was putting it off and putting it off but finally popped for the 24". Was wondering when it wouldnt be available anymore. As of right now they are gone. I presume there will be more at some point but I just got in on the last of them.

Wow! You're right, the refurb 24" 2.8GHz is gone although the clearance is still there. The refurb price point was very hard to resist.

Good for you guys!

Singapore has a refurb and clearance store but it seldom even has a iMac ! Help me ! Any ideas on how to get a last gen iMac ?

What about the previous 3.06? What do you think Apple is going to do with these? I doubt if they are selling many at this refurb price. Anybody have any thoughts/ideas?

Not sure how many people have taken delivery of their new/refurbed iMacs, but is everyone receiving a drop in disc for iLife 09? Seen a few people that said that, just curious if this is standard across the board. I dont understand why in the refurb section it says it comes with iLife 08.

If buying directly from Apple, people are getting the drop-in disk. Otherwise, you can still order for the $9.99 shipping. This includes buying from authorized dealers. Here's the link to the upgrade program: http://www.apple.com/ilife/uptodate/

Well they do have one of the 3.06 refurbished iMacs, but it goes for $1,899. Doesn't seem like quite as good a deal, but it does offer more. However for myself, I couldn't justify the $700 difference between it and the 2.8.

And congratulations VoodooDaddy, sounds like you got in right under the wire.

I expect there will be more of these 2.8ghz models in the coming weeks. Typically, from my experience and others have said the same thing here, Apple has large updates to their refurb section early Tuesday morning, like 4am.

Example, last year I was looking for a black macbook. They didnt have any, actually had very few macbook models at all. Tuesday morning I got up early and there were a ton to models to choose from. This wasnt the first time Ive seen that either on a Tuesday.

Yes thats the same refurb price as before the new release. And none in clearance. Maybe they are holding out before marking them down?

Update from another happy Apple customer (1st refurb iMac)

I got my iMac 24" (2.8) refurb today. I am in Canada and it shipped from Rancho Cordova, CA. I just turned it on a few moments ago and it looks amazing. No dead pixels and right now it is transferring my info from my old iMac G4 1.25.

Unpacking it was a real Apple experience. It came in a white box, no pretty pictures, but everything was brand new, at least it looked like that. The stand had the protective plastic cover. The iMac was wrapped in that white puffy protective bag, even with the apple sticker on the side asking to read the software agreement before opening it. The screen had another plastic cover protecting it. It even had the separate plastic cover for the Apple logo in the back. Keyboard and mouse were brand new and it came with the iLife 09 CPU Drop-In DVD (nice touch and makes sense for Apple to include it now rather that dealing with requests after). It makes me wonder if it was refurb at all, as some have suggested. :D

I will check everything else once I am finished with transfer, etc. but so far everything is great.

Thanks to all forum members for the valuable information posted in MacRumors Forums about these refurshed machines. I was a little hesitant since this is my first refurb.
