Sierra working so far (except CUDA), but I really wonder if other people here with Mac Pro 4,1 flashed to 5,1 can see the already 'bought' and downloaded macOS Sierra in the purchases section of the app store?

I can see it in the purchased section of the app store in El Capitan, but not in Sierra.

Does that mean OS X updates in Sierra have to be initiated with a hack? We will see it with the next updates.

if you want to be safe instal osx10.12 on a second partition to test it out before using it as your main install.
always a safe thing to do incase any apps you depend on are broken as well as your hardware cards (check there websites to see if they have any info too).

you can even install it on to a usb stick if you want then boot from the usb stick.

at the mo i have osx 10.8/9/10 backup partitions as well as osx10.10 on a SSD as my work drive so ill be installing osx 10.12 on to the 10.8 partition i think to play with it

if your computer is for work then it's best to not upgrade your main partition to fast as there's always bugs for a bit and the risk of software being broken

Clean installed and got it working 100%, but there's an issue. OS load times are very slow compared to El Cap (taking several minutes, I think it's going through the disk check each time). I wonder if the Accelsior shutdown driver needs to be updated? Anyone else with an Accelsior_E2 having this issue?

EDIT: Looks like I fixed it. Did another NVRAM reset, set the Startup Disk then enabled the Nvidia Web Driver. Subsequent reboots have been quick.

This is the part I have a problem with, yes. But it's not like Apple hasn't done this kind of thing many times before.

Agree that Apple has done these kind of things before, which is why they were a ~5% market share company before the iPod->iPhone run.. The iPod certainly stands on its own as a success, but a large reason that success segued to the iPhone was the reasonably open app environment created by the App Store which attracted 3rd party app/etc vendors to the ecosystem. Sure, some of the "old Apple" tendencies (draconian app approval process) existed during that time, but it has now only become worse with forcing terms like "Family share", removal of app store discoverability features, and now the draconian "Featuring" system (in addition to the approval process). So while all these things are "cloaked" as improving customer experience marketing spin, they basically dissuade 3rd parties from the ecosystem - this will eventually send Apple back to the ~5% market share company. They like to boast so much about their superior "company DNA", but this is the fatal flaw in their DNA that will lead to their demise.

My mistake was assuming that their flaw was not in their DNA but something they would grow out of. I was wrong - they are still the same "old Apple". I always believed the app store would get more features to help developers like paid for app upgrades, but that never happened. The lack of a paid upgrade feature in the App Store is probably the most telling of their flaw because it demonstrates neglect in understanding how software companies make money. Remember, Apple is a hardware company - yet now they get to dictate ALL terms of how 3rd parties operate in their app ecosystem (while never actually producing a profit from software products themselves - think about that for a moment). Where would any software company be if you could get free forever upgrades just by buying their v1.0 product? Killing the software industry standard paid upgrade mechanism has forced software companies into attempting all sorts of other mumbo-jumbo BS ways to generate profit, but the market has rejected most of these because they fail to work for all but a few types of products. I've come to accept that it's over.. time to move on..

Update my 2011 Mac Pro to Sierra a couple days ago. No issues with the download/install. The last couple of days problems have started to crop-up. All the issues are related to external hard drives. At any give time, the drives disappear from my desktop. When using Disk Utility (DU), sometimes they appear as unmounted or not at all in DU. I have found that if I reboot the machine, sometimes, not always, the drive appears. One drive, a 2Tb WD, just one a year old, I can't get it to initialize. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of problems.

The drive connected directly via the native USB 2.0 port?

Any good news about updating a MacPro 5,1 (mid 2010)? What will it do to make using my MacPro better? Since it will probably be the last system for my MACPRO. Is it worth the effort?

Yosemite Handoff with my update WiFi/BTLE card was bullet proof.
El Capitan had trouble until 10.11.4, then it worked
Sierra just broke it again during 10.12.1 beta 2.
I am not sure, what is causing this. General Preferences shows it and all the prerequisites are in System Info, but it just stops working.

I'm waiting for at least a .1 update to make the jump to Sierra on my 4,1->5,1. No one is experiencing any issues with USB 3.0 cards on a 4,1 or 5,1 under Sierra? I have a Sonnet USB 3.0 card with a lot of stuff connected to it.

I Just completed an install of Sierra on my cMP-5,1-6 core 3.33 directly onto a EVO 1 TB SSD mounted on a Velocity X2 PCI card. Took about 1 hour. Only problem I have had is not sure that I understand why I will need SIRI or if it even works. Good so far.

One hour!? My install of Sierra took around 20 minutes with Samsung 850 Pro mounted on a FASTA 6GU3 Pro.

Yes that included download time. According to Disk Sensei the Samsung EVO 840 bench marks have gone up a little to 498 read and 491.3 write.

That's almost as good as a cMP can go with this hardware.

I see no real incentive to upgrade for any 'pro' user at the moment - nearly all new features seem to be based on tighter integration with iOS devices etc.

I use my Mac Pro (4,1 -> 5,1) in my studio, running Logic X all day and haven't heard of any single feature that would be useful for me (especially as I don't have wifi or Bluetooth 4.0 and have no real need for them).

So ask yourself if you really will benefit from the upgrade/if you really need the potential headaches!

Cheers,

Ed

What version of OS X are you running?

I run 10.11.6 on my Mac Pro running Logic X and some Aperture/Phase one, and recently FCPX and DaVinci Resolve.

Out of boredom, I updated to Sierra on my old MBP and see no real benefit - my laptop will now not sleep.

Also, for whatever reason, I'm reading that BruceX scores are much better in El Capitan vs Sierra.

Skipping Sierra and going to a stable High Sierra seems like it could be the smart move for the pro user.

Cheers,

Ed

I have a 4,1 with 5,1 firmware also. I am confident replacing the GT120 video card will rectify a lot of my issues like random crashes and hanging whilst booting. Haven't found a cure yet for mouse double-clicking on single click. Very Frustrated.

Running just fine here, no sluggishness no real issues. I updated after sierra had been out a little while so I never tried it on Beta. Not that I try and avoid Beta I just only really update after the test stage.

High Sierra for example, I will update to that but I'm not interested in being a Beta tester. Ill just wait until it says I can update on the app store.

I just downloaded Sierra. Now I will make a bootable thumb drive and see how it goes.
